Chapter 2: The Recording on the Tablet

I didn’t drive home.

Not after what Lily had said.

I pulled into a nearly empty parking lot, turned off the engine, and stared at my phone.

For twelve years, I had defended Mark.

Against friends who said his family controlled him.

Against relatives who noticed how often he chose their opinions over mine.

Against the quiet voice in my own head telling me something wasn’t right.

I always told myself he was just loyal.

I told myself he was trying to keep peace.

But that night, sitting in the dark with my daughter asleep in the back seat, I realized something terrifying.

Maybe keeping peace had never meant protecting me.

I called my younger sister Zoe.

She answered immediately.

“Chloe? Are you okay?””

I tried to speak, but my voice broke.

“Megan slapped Lily.””

Silence.

Not normal silence.

The kind where someone already knows there’s more.

Then Zoe whispered:

“Where are you?””

“I’m parked near my mom’s old neighborhood.””

“Don’t go home.””

My heart started racing.

“What?””

“Chloe, listen to me. Don’t go back to that house.””

I gripped the phone.

“Why?””

Zoe took a shaky breath.

“Because I found something on Mark’s old tablet.””

I sat up.

“What did you find?””

“An audio file.””

My mouth went dry.

“An audio file of what?””

“Mark talking to Megan.””

The parking lot suddenly felt colder.

“When?””

“Two nights ago.””

I looked back at Lily sleeping.

“What were they saying?””

Zoe hesitated.

Then she said:

“Chloe, I think tonight was planned.””

My chest tightened.

“No.””

“I wish I was wrong.””

“Send it to me.””

A few seconds later, my phone buzzed.

A video file appeared.

My finger hovered over the screen.

Part of me didn’t want to press play.

Because once I heard it, I couldn’t pretend anymore.

I pressed the button.

At first, there was only background noise.

Then I heard Megan’s voice.

“What if Chloe refuses to leave?””

My blood went cold.

Then Mark answered.

“Then make sure she loses control.””

I covered my mouth.

The video showed a blurry image from a tablet camera.

Mark and Megan were sitting at Diane’s kitchen table.

The same kitchen where we had just eaten Thanksgiving dinner.

Megan leaned closer.

“And if she gets angry?””

Mark shrugged.

“Everyone already knows how she is.””

My stomach twisted.

“She’ll look unstable.””

Zoe’s voice came through the phone.

“Chloe…”

I couldn’t answer.

I just kept watching.

Megan smiled.

“And what about Lily?””

The room became completely still.

Mark looked down at the table.

Then he said:

“She’s the reason we have to do this before Monday.””

I stopped breathing.

I replayed that sentence three times.

Before Monday.

Why?

What happened Monday?

I grabbed the phone.

“Zoe, there has to be more.””

“There is.””

My hands trembled.

“What?””

“There was another file.””

“Play it.””

“I tried. It’s damaged.””

“Can you fix it?””

“I’m working on it.””

I stared at the frozen image of my husband.

The man who held Lily when she was born.

The man who promised me we were a team.

The man who just watched his sister hurt our daughter.

“Chloe,” Zoe said softly.

I swallowed.

“What?””

“There’s something else you need to know.””

“What?””

“I recognized the phrase ‘before Monday.’”

My eyebrows pulled together.

“From where?””

Zoe went quiet.

Then she answered:

“From the email I found on Mark’s tablet.””

I felt my entire body go numb.

“What email?””

May you like

Zoe whispered:

“The one where he was asking someone how quickly a mother could lose custody of her own child.””
