Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew the Truth

I couldn’t speak.

For several seconds, I just stood there with the phone pressed against my ear, staring at Lily’s small face.

She was coloring at Zoe’s kitchen table, completely unaware that her father had been trying to erase her mother from her life.

“Remove me?”” I finally whispered.

“What exactly does that mean?””

Rachel’s voice remained calm, but I could hear hesitation behind it.

“Mrs. Anderson, I’m not supposed to discuss another person’s consultation. But after seeing some of the information provided, I became concerned.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What information?””

There was a pause.

Then she said:

“Your husband claimed you had violent outbursts. He said you were becoming emotionally unpredictable.””

A bitter laugh escaped my mouth.

“Violent?””

I looked at the bruise on Lily’s cheek.

The bruise his sister gave her.

“He watched his sister hit our daughter and blamed me for reacting.””

Rachel was quiet.

Then she asked:

“Did you say his sister hit your daughter?””

“Yes.””

“Did anyone else witness it?””

I looked toward Zoe.

“Yes. His entire family.””

“And did anyone support your version of events?””

My stomach sank.

“No.””

Rachel sighed.

“That’s what worried me.””

I walked away from the table, lowering my voice.

“What do you mean?””

“Your husband didn’t just schedule a consultation. He brought a prepared statement.””

My heart pounded.

“A statement?””

“Yes. He had dates, descriptions of incidents, and accusations already written down.””

I closed my eyes.

“Incidents that never happened.””

“That’s what I was trying to determine.””

I looked back at Lily.

She was drawing a picture of our family.

Four people.

Me.

Her.

Mark.

And a tiny dog we didn’t even own.

A normal family.

A family she still believed existed.

“Rachel,” I said quietly, “why are you telling me this?””

Another pause.

Then she answered:

“Because something about his story didn’t make sense.””

“What didn’t make sense?””

“He said you were dangerous when angry.””

My jaw tightened.

“And?””

“He said you attacked his sister during Thanksgiving.””

My entire body went still.

“He already told you that?””

“Yes.””

“But Thanksgiving was last night.””

Silence.

The meaning hit me before she even said it.

“He filed the statement before it happened.””

Rachel didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

I slowly sat down.

The room spun around me.

“He planned it.””

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Anderson.””

“No.””

I looked at Lily.

“No, I need proof.””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“There may be something else.””

“What?””

“When your husband left my office, he forgot a folder.””

I held my breath.

“What was inside?””

“I can’t give you confidential documents.””

“I’m not asking for his documents. I’m asking what was in the folder.””

Rachel hesitated.

“Photographs.””

My stomach dropped.

“Of what?””

“Your daughter.””

I felt sick.

“Why would he have pictures of Lily?””

“I don’t know.””

“Rachel.””

Her silence told me everything.

She knew.

She was just afraid to say it.

“Were they pictures of injuries?””

“No.””

I exhaled slightly.

Then Rachel continued.

“But they were pictures taken without your knowledge.””

My blood ran cold.

“Where?””

“Different places. At home. Outside. School pickup.””

I looked toward the window.

For the first time, I wondered how long I had been watched.

How long Mark had been collecting pieces of my life to use against me.

“I need that folder,” I said.

“I can’t release it.””

“Then tell me what I need to do.””

Rachel gave me instructions.

She told me to document everything.

Save every message.

Keep every recording.

Do not confront Mark until I understood the full situation.

Especially because, according to her, he was expecting me to react.

“He wants you angry,” she said.

I looked at the phone.

“Why?””

“Because that’s the story he’s building.””

After the call ended, I sat silently.

Zoe placed a hand on my shoulder.

“What did she say?””

I looked at my sister.

“Mark has been preparing to take Lily away.””

Zoe’s face hardened.

“I knew he was protecting his family.””

She swallowed.

“But I never thought he was planning this.””

I picked up my phone.

There was another message from Mark.

*You need to come home. We’re going to fix this.*

I stared at those words.

Fix this.

That was what people said when they wanted to hide damage.

Not repair it.

I typed a reply.

Then deleted it.

I typed another.

Deleted that too.

Finally, I wrote:

*I’ll come by later to get some things.*

Zoe immediately looked at me.

“Are you sure?””

“No.””

I looked at Lily.

“But I need to see what he does when he thinks he’s in control.””

Three hours later, I pulled into the driveway of the home I had shared with Mark for seven years.

The house looked exactly the same.

The Christmas lights still hung from the porch.

The flower pots still sat by the door.

But it didn’t feel like home anymore.

I unlocked the door.

And the first thing I saw was Mark sitting in the living room.

Waiting.

His expression softened.

“Chloe.””

I didn’t answer.

His eyes moved toward Lily.

“Sweetheart, come give Daddy a hug.””

Lily immediately grabbed my hand.

She didn’t move.

Mark noticed.

And something flashed across his face.

Not sadness.

Annoyance.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

He stood up.

“Chloe, we need to talk.””

I looked around the room.

Then at him.

“About what?””

He took a deep breath.

“About your behavior last night.””

I almost smiled.

“You mean when I defended our daughter?””

His jaw tightened.

“You assaulted my sister.””

“She assaulted Lily first.””

“Chloe.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to rewrite what happened.””

Mark’s eyes narrowed.

Then he whispered:

“You really want to do this?””

The way he said it made my skin crawl.

Because it didn’t sound like a husband asking his wife to stop.

It sounded like someone giving a warning.

Then he reached for a folder on the table.

And placed it between us.

“I was hoping you’d make the right choice.””

I stared at it.

“What is that?””

He smiled sadly.

May you like

And that scared me more than anger.

“Your future.””
