Chapter 12: Megan’s Confession
Nobody moved.
Megan stood in my mother’s doorway, looking completely different from the woman I had seen at Thanksgiving.
No confidence.
No smug smile.
No sharp comments.
Just fear.
My mother stood immediately.
“You need to leave.””
Megan looked at her.
“I can’t.””
“Yes, you can.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“Because if I leave now, Chloe will never know everything.””
I stared at her.
“You’re right.””
She looked at me.
“And you’re going to tell me.””
Megan nodded slowly.
“I am.””
My mother shook her head.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
Megan looked exhausted.
“I understand exactly.””
I crossed my arms.
“Start talking.””
She walked into the room.
Then sat down.
For the first time in years, Megan looked small.
“I was jealous.””
The confession surprised me.
“Of what?””
She looked at me.
“Of you.””
I almost laughed.
“You destroyed my life because you were jealous?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Not just because of that.””
“Then why?””
She looked at Lily’s picture on the wall.
“You had everything I wanted.””
I stared.
“You had Mark.””
“He’s your brother.””
“I know.””
Her eyes filled.
“But he always chose you.””
The words made no sense.
“What?””
“When we were kids, Mark was the only person who protected me.””
I waited.
“He was my hero.””
She looked down.
“Then he met you.””
My stomach tightened.
“Megan.””
“I hated that you became his priority.””
“That’s not an excuse.””
“I know.””
She wiped her tears.
“But when Ethan came back…”
I froze.
“What?””
Megan looked at me.
“I knew Ethan was Lily’s father.””
“You always knew.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her voice dropped.
“Because I thought if you lost Lily’s biological father, you would finally understand what losing someone felt like.””
I stared at her.
The cruelty of it made me speechless.
“You wanted me to suffer.””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
Then she whispered:
“But Mark didn’t.””
“What?””
“He loved Lily.””
I looked away.
“Despite everything.””
Megan nodded.
“He never saw her as someone else’s child.””
“Then why did he try to take her?””
Her face changed.
“Because I convinced him.””
I felt sick.
“Tell me.””
She took a breath.
“I told him you were going to leave him.””
“I never said that.””
“I know.””
“And?””
“I told him Ethan would come back and take Lily.””
I closed my eyes.
“You manipulated him.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought if Mark lost Lily, he would finally understand how I felt when everyone left me.””
Silence.
A horrible silence.
Then Zoe spoke.
“You destroyed a child’s life because you were hurt.””
Megan nodded.
“Yes.””
No excuses.
No defense.
Just guilt.
I looked at her.
“Why come now?””
She looked at Lily.
“Because when she asked if she did something wrong…”
Her voice broke.
“I realized I became the kind of person who hurt me when I was little.””
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone buzzed.
A new message.
This time from Ethan.
*Chloe, I found something about Mark’s custody case. You need to see it before Monday.*
I opened the attachment.
A document appeared.
The top line made my blood run cold.
*Emergency Custody Petition — Submitted by Mark Anderson.*
But it wasn’t the contents that shocked me.
It was the signature at the bottom.
May you like
Because beside Mark’s signature…
was mine.
