Chapter 6: The Secret Megan Hid
Mark ended the call too quickly.
Too quickly for someone who had nothing to hide.
He placed the phone on the table.
Then he looked at me.
“Who contacted you?””
I almost laughed.
“You’re worried about that?””
“Answer me.””
“No.””
His eyes hardened.
“Chloe.””
For years, that tone would have scared me.
The disappointed husband.
The reasonable one.
The one who made me question myself.
But not anymore.
Not after watching my daughter cry alone at a Thanksgiving table.
Not after hearing him discuss destroying my life.
“You’re not in control of this conversation anymore,” I said.
His expression shifted.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
“Then explain.””
Silence.
“Explain why you were preparing custody documents.””
“I wasn’t.””
“Explain why your sister knew what was going to happen before it happened.””
His jaw tightened.
“Lily misunderstood.””
My chest tightened.
“You’re blaming a five-year-old now?””
“No, I’m saying—”
“You always have an excuse.””
Mark looked toward Lily.
“Go to your room, sweetheart.””
“No.””
The word surprised both of us.
Lily stood beside me.
“I want to stay with Mommy.””
Mark stared at her.
And I saw it again.
That flash of irritation.
Quick.
Almost invisible.
But real.
“Lily,” he said softly, “Daddy is talking.””
She held onto my hand.
“Mommy said I don’t have to be scared.””
Mark went quiet.
That was the moment I knew.
Whatever happened next, my daughter would never again believe she had to stay silent to keep adults happy.
I picked up the folder.
“I’m taking this.””
Mark stepped forward.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because it’s mine.””
“So?””
His face changed.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
“I understand perfectly.””
I held the folder against my chest.
“You built a case against me.””
“I built protection.””
“For yourself.””
“For Lily.””
I looked at him.
“Don’t use her name to justify hurting her.””
The room went silent.
Then Mark said something I never expected.
“You think Megan wanted to hurt Lily?””
I frowned.
“What?””
He looked away.
For a second, he looked tired.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Tired.
“Megan has been struggling.””
I stared at him.
“Struggling?””
“Yes.””
“She slapped our child.””
“I know.””
The words stopped me.
“You know?””
Mark didn’t answer.
My voice lowered.
“When did you know?””
He looked down.
And that was when I understood.
He had known all along.
“You knew she was going to do it.””
“No.””
“Then why did you say ‘I know’?””
He rubbed his face.
“I knew Megan was angry.””
“Why?””
Silence.
“Mark.””
He sat down.
For the first time all day, he looked less like a man attacking me.
And more like a man trapped.
“She was desperate.””
“For what?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“What is Megan hiding?””
Mark looked up.
And before he could speak, his phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
I saw the name.
Megan.
Mark quickly grabbed the phone.
Too late.
I had already seen the preview.
*Did you tell Chloe the truth about Lily?*
My entire body went cold.
“About Lily?””
Mark stood up.
“Chloe, wait.””
I stepped back.
“What truth?””
“Nothing.””
“Nothing?””
I pointed at his phone.
“Megan just asked if you told me the truth about our daughter.””
Mark’s face went pale.
Then he said the one thing that confirmed my worst fear.
“She wasn’t supposed to contact you.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
He didn’t answer.
“Why wasn’t she supposed to contact me?””
Mark looked toward the window.
Then quietly said:
“Because if you know what happened before Lily was born…”
He stopped.
I waited.
But he didn’t finish.
“What happened before Lily was born?””
His phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, from Megan.
Mark looked at it.
Then at me.
And I saw fear.
Real fear.
Not the fake concern he used when he wanted sympathy.
Real fear.
I reached for the phone.
He pulled it away.
“Chloe, don’t.””
“Give me the phone.””
“No.””
“Why?””
He swallowed.
“Because once you read it…”
His voice cracked.
“…there’s no going back.””
I stared at him.
“Give me the phone.””
He didn’t move.
So I grabbed it from his hand.
The message was only one sentence.
May you like
One sentence that changed everything I thought I knew about my marriage.
*Mark, she can’t find out that Lily isn’t your biological daughter.*
