Chapter 8: The Evidence She Feared
Nobody moved.
The three students stood in complete darkness.
Outside the room, Mrs. Vance walked slowly through the basement hallway.
Her heels clicked against the floor.
“I’m not angry,” she called.
The sentence made Marcus almost laugh.
Because she sounded exactly like someone who was angry.
“I just want to understand why students think they can invade private school records.””
Jordan whispered:
“She knows.””
Marcus nodded.
She knew they had found something.
Mrs. Vance stopped outside the door.
“You have no idea what you’re involved in.””
The door opened slightly.
A thin line of light entered the room.
Marcus held his breath.
Then Mrs. Vance stepped inside.
She looked around.
She didn’t look surprised.
That was the most frightening part.
She looked like she expected this.
“You should have walked away.””
Olivia stepped forward.
“You ruined people’s futures.””
Mrs. Vance looked at her.
For the first time, there was no fake kindness.
No professional smile.
Just irritation.
“You still blame me?””
Olivia’s voice shook.
“You destroyed my scholarship.””
Mrs. Vance tilted her head.
“No.””
She picked up a folder.
“You destroyed your own chance by believing someone like you belonged there.””
Marcus felt his hands tighten.
But Olivia didn’t step back.
“That’s what you told yourself?””
Mrs. Vance smiled.
“That’s what the world teaches everyone.””
Jordan quietly lifted his phone.
But before he could record, Mrs. Vance noticed.
“Still recording?””
She sighed.
“You young people always think a video changes everything.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Doesn’t it?””
Her expression changed.
A small crack appeared.
“No.””
She placed the folder down.
“Because people believe whoever has power.””
The words were chilling.
Because she wasn’t denying it.
She was admitting it.
Marcus took a step forward.
“Why did you choose who got opportunities?””
Mrs. Vance looked at him.
“Because someone had to.””
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Because you wanted control.””
For a moment, silence filled the room.
Then Mrs. Vance laughed.
A quiet, bitter laugh.
“You really think you understand everything.””
She walked toward the shelf.
“You think this is about me?””
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Mrs. Vance looked at the folders.
“I was following instructions.””
The room became silent.
Olivia stared at her.
“From who?””
Mrs. Vance didn’t answer.
That was the first time Marcus saw something different in her.
Fear.
Real fear.
A sound came from the hallway.
A phone ringing.
Mrs. Vance looked at her own pocket.
Her face immediately changed.
She answered.
“Yes?””
Nobody could hear the other person.
But everyone watched her reaction.
Her shoulders dropped.
Her confidence disappeared.
“I understand.””
A pause.
“No. They don’t know everything.””
Marcus exchanged a glance with Jordan.
Everything?
What did that mean?
Mrs. Vance ended the call.
She looked at the three students.
“You need to forget what you found.””
Olivia shook her head.
“No.””
Mrs. Vance stepped closer.
“You don’t understand what happens when people with money and influence feel threatened.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Who called you?””
She ignored him.
Instead, she walked toward the door.
Then she stopped.
“Marcus.””
He looked up.
“You think getting your scholarship back is the ending.””
Her voice became quiet.
“It’s the beginning.””
She left.
The basement door closed.
Nobody spoke.
Then Jordan looked down at the folder Marcus had opened earlier.
His face suddenly changed.
“Guys.””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
Jordan pointed at the page.
“There’s another name on this file.””
Olivia leaned closer.
And when Marcus saw it, his blood ran cold.
May you like
Because the name written beneath his…
was his mother’s.
