Chapter 11: The Favorite Son
The name on the document was impossible to ignore.
Dylan Hale.
Richard Hale’s son.
Marcus stared at it.
“So all of this…”
Elaine nodded.
“Was about him.””
Olivia looked angry.
“He destroyed dozens of students for one person?””
Elaine didn’t answer.
Because the answer was already there.
Jordan flipped through the documents.
“There are years of records.””
Elaine nodded.
“Richard Hale wanted Dylan to have the best opportunities.””
Marcus looked at the papers.
“But Dylan wasn’t qualified.””
Elaine sighed.
“That was the problem.””
She explained that Dylan was a talented student in some areas, but he did not have the grades or achievements needed for the elite programs he wanted.
Instead of accepting that, Richard created a system.
Not publicly.
Not obviously.
Small changes.
Small favors.
Small decisions that affected real people.
Mrs. Vance became the person who controlled recommendations.
And students like Marcus became obstacles.
Marcus looked at Elaine.
“Why did she agree?””
Elaine looked away.
“Because she believed power mattered more than fairness.””
The sentence was quiet.
But it explained everything.
That evening, Marcus returned home with copies of the evidence.
His mother sat across from him.
“You found the truth.””
“Yes.””
She looked tired.
“But truth doesn’t always win quickly.””
Marcus knew.
They had evidence.
But Richard Hale had money.
Connections.
Influence.
The next morning, Principal Anderson called Marcus into his office.
His expression was serious.
“We have a problem.””
Marcus sat down.
“What happened?””
Anderson placed a letter on the desk.
“Mrs. Vance has hired legal representation.””
Marcus expected that.
“But there’s more.””
The principal continued.
“She claims the video was manipulated.””
Marcus stared.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
“Then why believe her?””
“I don’t.””
Anderson paused.
“But the school board is under pressure.””
Marcus looked at him.
“From Richard Hale?””
The principal didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Marcus felt the frustration building.
“They’re trying to bury this.””
“Yes.””
Principal Anderson looked at him.
“But we have something they don’t.””
Marcus waited.
“People.””
The principal explained that several former students were willing to come forward.
Olivia.
Ethan.
Others.
Students who had spent years staying silent.
For the first time, Marcus felt like they had a chance.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A familiar voice spoke.
Richard Hale.
“Marcus.””
Marcus immediately stood.
“What do you want?””
Richard sounded calm.
“I want to make sure you understand something.””
Marcus said nothing.
“This situation can end quietly.””
“Meaning?””
“You keep your scholarship. You move forward. Everyone forgets this happened.””
Marcus felt disgusted.
“And if I don’t?””
A pause.
Then Richard answered.
“Then you should understand that powerful people have powerful ways of protecting themselves.””
Marcus looked out the window.
“You’re threatening me.””
“No.””
Richard’s voice remained smooth.
“I’m offering you a choice.””
Marcus tightened his grip on the phone.
“You already made your choice.””
Richard became silent.
Then he said something Marcus never expected.
“Ask your mother what happened after she refused my offer.””
Marcus froze.
“What offer?””
But the call ended.
Marcus stood there.
May you like
Because suddenly, there was another piece of the story.
A piece his mother had never told him.
