Chapter 13: The Insider’s Truth
The entire school felt different after the news broke.
For years, Richard Hale had been seen as untouchable.
His name was on buildings.
His donations were celebrated.
His picture appeared at every major school event.
But now, that same name was connected to an investigation.
Marcus sat in the library with Jordan and Olivia, watching the constant stream of updates.
Students who had once whispered quietly were now speaking openly.
Former graduates were sharing their stories.
Parents were asking questions.
And more people were coming forward.
Jordan looked up from his laptop.
“This is bigger than we thought.””
Marcus nodded.
“Because it wasn’t just about one scholarship.””
Olivia looked at the documents spread across the table.
“It was about deciding who deserved a future.””
The sentence stayed with them.
Then Marcus received a message.
Unknown number.
Again.
He opened it carefully.
*Meet me at the old auditorium. I have the proof that started everything.*
Jordan immediately shook his head.
“No.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You didn’t even ask who it is.””
“Because every mysterious message in our lives has turned into a disaster.””
Olivia looked at Marcus.
“But we need answers.””
Marcus knew she was right.
They had exposed the problem.
But they still didn’t know who had helped them.
That person mattered.
After school, the three of them entered the old auditorium.
The room was empty.
Dust covered the seats.
The stage lights were off.
Marcus walked toward the center.
“Hello?””
A voice answered from behind the curtain.
“I wasn’t sure you would come.””
A man stepped forward.
Marcus recognized him immediately.
Dylan Hale.
Richard Hale’s son.
The person everything had been built around.
Jordan stepped between them.
“Why are you here?””
Dylan raised his hands.
“I’m not here to fight.””
Marcus stared at him.
“You’re the reason this happened.””
Dylan looked down.
“I know.””
The answer surprised everyone.
Dylan walked closer.
“For years, I let people believe I was the victim.””
Olivia frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Dylan took a deep breath.
“It means my father convinced me that everyone else was against me.””
Marcus watched him carefully.
“You knew?””
Dylan nodded.
“Not at first.””
He explained.
When he was younger, he believed his father was helping him.
He thought the extra support was normal.
He thought every family had someone opening doors for them.
But as he got older, he started noticing.
Students disappearing from programs.
Teachers changing recommendations.
Opportunities moving away from people who earned them.
“And Mrs. Vance?””
Dylan looked ashamed.
“She told me she was doing what my father wanted.””
Marcus felt sick.
“She knew.””
“Yes.””
Dylan reached into his backpack.
He pulled out a small storage device.
“I found this in my father’s office.””
Jordan stared.
“What is it?””
“Everything.””
The word echoed.
Dylan continued.
“Emails. Meeting notes. Instructions.””
Olivia looked at him.
“Why give this to us?””
Dylan looked toward the empty stage.
“Because yesterday, when I saw Marcus standing there after she tore his letter…”
He paused.
“I realized I was the reason someone else lost their chance.””
Marcus didn’t know what to say.
Dylan looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
The apology was simple.
But it carried years of guilt.
Marcus accepted the device.
Then Dylan added:
“There’s one thing you need to know.””
“What?””
“My father doesn’t know I took this.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Then why are you telling us?””
Dylan looked toward the auditorium doors.
“Because he will find out soon.””
As if the words summoned him, a phone began ringing.
Dylan looked at his screen.
His face turned pale.
“It’s him.””
Nobody spoke.
The phone kept ringing.
Then Dylan answered.
“Dad?””
Marcus watched his expression change.
Dylan listened.
Then slowly lowered the phone.
“What did he say?”” Olivia asked.
May you like
Dylan looked at them.
“He knows.””
