Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Curtain

The SUV door opened slowly.

The man stepped out wearing an expensive suit and a calm expression.

Richard Hale.

Everyone in town knew his name.

He was the chairman of the school foundation.

The man whose donations had funded new classrooms, technology programs, and countless school events.

He smiled politely.

But Marcus noticed something.

The smile never reached his eyes.

“Marcus,” Richard said.

“We need to talk.””

Ethan immediately stepped forward.

“He shouldn’t talk to you alone.””

Richard looked at him.

A small smile appeared.

“Ethan.””

The way he said the name made Marcus uncomfortable.

Not surprised.

Not curious.

Like he already knew him.

“You’ve always been emotional,” Richard said.

Ethan’s face tightened.

Marcus looked between them.

“You know each other?””

Richard ignored the question.

He looked at Marcus.

“I heard there was a misunderstanding at school.””

Marcus almost laughed.

“A misunderstanding?””

Richard remained calm.

“Mrs. Vance is a respected educator. I’m sure there are two sides to this.””

Marcus felt anger rising.

“She tore up my scholarship letter.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“I heard.””

“And?””

“And sometimes young people misunderstand difficult conversations.””

Marcus stared at him.

The same words.

The same technique.

Making something obvious sound complicated.

“You think what she did was okay?””

Richard didn’t answer directly.

Instead, he looked at Ethan.

“You should be careful who you trust.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Are you threatening him?””

Richard sighed.

“No. I’m giving advice.””

Marcus looked at the school building.

Then back at Richard.

“Why do you care?””

That question finally changed Richard’s expression.

Only for a moment.

But Marcus saw it.

A flash of worry.

“I care about this school.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You care about controlling it.””

The air became silent.

Richard looked at Marcus differently now.

Not like a student.

Like a problem.

“You’re very confident.””

“I’m telling the truth.””

Richard walked closer.

“You’re young. You think truth is enough.””

Marcus held his ground.

Richard lowered his voice.

“Sometimes the people who search for truth discover things they weren’t ready to find.””

Then he turned away.

Before getting back into the SUV, he stopped.

“Oh, and Marcus?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Congratulations on your scholarship.””

The words sounded strange.

Almost fake.

Richard smiled.

“Enjoy it while it lasts.””

The SUV drove away.

Marcus watched until the vehicle disappeared.

Ethan finally spoke.

“He knows.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Knows what?””

Ethan’s face was pale.

“That we found out.””

“Found out what?””

Ethan looked toward the dark school windows.

Then whispered:

“The reason Mrs. Vance was willing to destroy students’ futures.””

Marcus waited.

Ethan continued.

“She wasn’t changing scholarship decisions.””

A pause.

“She was hiding who actually deserved them.””

Marcus felt his stomach drop.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan looked at the school.

“Marcus…”

His voice became quieter.

“Your scholarship wasn’t the only one she stole.””

The wind moved through the empty parking lot.

“And if we expose what she did, someone much more powerful than Mrs. Vance will fall.””

Marcus looked back at the school.

Because suddenly, this was no longer about a teacher.

It was about an entire system.

And somewhere inside that building…

there were more stolen letters waiting to be found.
