Chapter 7: The Hidden Archive

Marcus barely slept that night.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the torn pieces of his scholarship letter falling to the floor.

But now he knew something worse.

Those pieces were not an isolated moment.

They were part of a pattern.

A pattern that had been hidden for years.

The next morning, Marcus met Jordan and Olivia in the library before classes started.

The old library was almost empty.

Only the sound of pages turning and the hum of the lights filled the room.

Olivia placed her notebook on the table.

“I found something else.””

Marcus looked up.

“What?””

She opened to the last few pages.

“I started looking through old records after yesterday.””

Jordan leaned closer.

“What kind of records?””

“Scholarship announcements. Student achievements. Anything connected to Mrs. Vance.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why?””

“Because I wanted to know how many people disappeared after she told them they weren’t good enough.””

She pulled out several printed pages.

Names.

Dates.

Programs.

Universities.

Marcus scanned the information.

Then he noticed something strange.

“Wait.””

He pointed at the list.

“These students all had high scores.””

Olivia nodded.

“Exactly.””

Jordan looked confused.

“So why didn’t they get selected?””

“That’s what I wanted to know.””

Olivia tapped one name.

“Look at the recommendation section.””

Marcus leaned closer.

The same pattern appeared again and again.

Students with excellent grades received negative recommendations from Mrs. Vance.

Students with lower qualifications received glowing reviews.

And many of those students had one thing in common.

A connection to the school foundation.

Jordan sat back.

“This is not random.””

“No,” Olivia said quietly.

“It’s not.””

Marcus felt a strange mix of anger and sadness.

Every name represented a person.

A dream.

A future.

He imagined each student opening a letter like he did.

Feeling proud.

Then having someone convince them they weren’t worthy.

“Where did you get these records?”” Marcus asked.

Olivia hesitated.

“I found an old storage room.””

Jordan looked surprised.

“Inside the school?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible. Students aren’t allowed there.””

Olivia looked at him.

“That’s why I think nobody checked.””

She explained that the room was hidden behind old filing cabinets in the basement.

A place nobody used anymore.

Marcus looked at the documents.

“We need to see it.””

Jordan immediately shook his head.

“Marcus.””

“We need proof.””

Olivia nodded.

“He’s right.””

After school, the three of them waited until the building became quiet.

The basement smelled like dust and old paper.

Their footsteps echoed through the empty hallway.

Olivia stopped in front of a forgotten door.

“This is it.””

The door was locked.

Jordan looked around.

“Great. Secret room. Locked door. This is exactly how every bad decision starts in movies.””

Marcus smiled slightly.

But Olivia was already checking the handle.

Then she noticed something.

“The lock is broken.””

She pushed gently.

The door opened.

Inside were shelves filled with old folders.

Not random files.

Organized files.

Marcus stepped inside.

A cold feeling moved through him.

Someone had been keeping records here.

Jordan turned on the lights.

Dust covered everything except one shelf.

That shelf looked recently used.

Olivia walked toward it.

Her face changed.

“What?””

She pulled out a folder.

The label was simple.

*Scholarship Review Committee.*

Marcus opened it.

Inside were copies of applications.

Private notes.

Recommendations.

Then he saw his own name.

His heart stopped.

Next to his application was a handwritten comment.

Not from the university.

From Mrs. Vance.

Marcus read it silently.

Jordan noticed his expression.

“What does it say?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Olivia gently took the page.

Her eyes moved across the words.

Then she whispered:

“She knew.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Knew what?””

Olivia turned the paper around.

The note wasn’t about his grades.

It wasn’t about his abilities.

It was about something completely different.

Something personal.

Something Marcus had never told the school.

Before anyone could speak, footsteps echoed from the hallway.

Someone was coming.

Jordan turned off the light.

They froze.

The basement door slowly opened.

A voice called out:

“I know you’re in here.””

May you like

Marcus recognized it immediately.

Mrs. Vance.
