Chapter 12: The Offer She Refused
Marcus didn’t wait until dinner.
He went straight home.
His mother immediately knew something was wrong.
“What happened?””
Marcus closed the door.
“Richard Hale called me.””
Her face changed.
Not fear.
Something deeper.
Pain.
“What did he say?””
Marcus stared at her.
“He told me to ask you what happened after you refused his offer.””
His mother became completely still.
For a moment, she looked like she was fifteen years younger.
Like she was back in that classroom again.
“What offer?””
Marcus asked.
She sat down slowly.
“I hoped you would never find out.””
Those words made his heart sink.
“Mom.””
She looked at him.
“After my scholarship was taken away, Richard contacted me.””
Marcus listened.
“He told me there was another opportunity.””
“What kind?””
“A different program.””
“Then why didn’t you take it?””
His mother laughed softly.
A sad laugh.
“Because it wasn’t an opportunity.””
Marcus sat down.
“What was it?””
“He wanted me to stop asking questions.””
The room became quiet.
“He knew I had noticed things. Other students losing scholarships. Other families being pushed aside.””
Marcus felt anger rising.
“What did he offer you?””
“A position.””
“Where?””
“Working with the foundation.””
Marcus stared.
“You mean he wanted you to join them?””
“Yes.””
His mother looked down.
“He said I could help decide who received opportunities.””
Marcus understood.
“He wanted to control you.””
She nodded.
“I refused.””
“What happened?””
Her eyes became distant.
“I lost everything connected to that school.””
Marcus felt a wave of sadness.
Not anger.
Because now he understood.
His mother hadn’t failed.
She had chosen not to become part of the problem.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t want you growing up believing that doing the right thing meant losing everything.””
Marcus reached across the table.
“You should have told me.””
She smiled sadly.
“Maybe.””
Then her expression changed.
“Marcus, there is something else.””
He waited.
“When Richard called you, did he sound worried?””
Marcus thought.
“Yes.””
His mother nodded.
“Good.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Good?””
“That means he knows he’s losing control.””
The next day, Marcus and the others prepared to release the evidence.
But before they could, something unexpected happened.
A school announcement interrupted the morning classes.
Principal Anderson’s voice came through the speakers.
“Students and staff, there has been a new development regarding the scholarship investigation.””
Everyone stopped.
Marcus looked toward Jordan.
“What happened?””
Jordan checked his phone.
Then his face changed.
“Marcus…”
“What?””
Jordan turned the screen toward him.
A news article had just been posted.
The headline was already spreading.
*School Foundation Chairman Richard Hale Accused of Scholarship Manipulation.*
Marcus stared.
“How did this get out?””
Nobody knew.
Then Olivia received a message.
She read it silently.
Her eyes widened.
“What?””
Marcus asked.
She looked up.
“It’s from Elaine.””
“What did she say?””
Olivia showed them.
Only one sentence.
*I didn’t release the evidence. Someone inside the foundation did.*
Marcus looked at the article again.
