Chapter 14: The Final Hearing
The school board meeting was held three days later.
The room was packed.
Parents.
Teachers.
Students.
Reporters.
Everyone wanted answers.
Marcus sat beside his mother.
Across the room, Richard Hale sat with his lawyers.
He looked calm.
Too calm.
Mrs. Vance sat beside him.
But she looked different.
The confidence was gone.
The person who once stood over students now avoided eye contact.
Principal Anderson stepped forward.
“We are here to review serious allegations regarding scholarship recommendations and student treatment.””
Richard’s attorney immediately stood.
“We object to the language being used before all facts are presented.””
The board chair nodded.
“We will review evidence.””
Marcus watched quietly.
This was the moment.
Not revenge.
Not anger.
Truth.
Olivia spoke first.
She described what happened to her.
Then Ethan.
Then other former students.
Each story added another piece.
A pattern.
A history.
Then Marcus was called.
He walked to the front.
The room became silent.
He looked at Mrs. Vance.
Then Richard.
Then everyone else.
“I used to think being quiet protected me.””
His voice was steady.
“I thought if I worked hard enough, nobody could take anything away.””
He looked at the board.
“But I learned something.””
A pause.
“Sometimes people don’t attack your ability. They attack your belief that you belong.””
Nobody moved.
Marcus continued.
“My scholarship letter was torn in half.””
He looked toward Mrs. Vance.
“But that was not the worst part.””
The room listened.
“The worst part was that she wanted me to believe she was right.””
Mrs. Vance looked down.
Then the evidence was presented.
The hidden archive.
The records.
The documents.
Finally, Dylan stepped forward.
The room reacted immediately.
Richard’s expression changed for the first time.
“Dylan.””
His voice was quiet.
A warning.
But Dylan continued walking.
“I was the reason this happened.””
The room became silent.
Richard stood.
“You don’t understand what you’re saying.””
Dylan looked at him.
“For the first time, I do.””
He handed over the storage device.
“This contains conversations and records proving what happened.””
Richard’s attorney immediately objected.
But the board reviewed the material.
Minutes passed.
Then an investigator entered the room.
The expression on his face said everything.
The evidence was real.
Richard slowly sat down.
The man who always controlled the room had finally lost control.
Mrs. Vance began crying.
“I didn’t think it would go this far.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You knew it was wrong.””
She didn’t answer.
Because she did.
The board announced that both Richard Hale and Mrs. Vance would be removed from their positions pending further investigation.
Students who had been denied opportunities would have their cases reviewed.
The room erupted.
But Marcus didn’t feel victorious.
He felt relieved.
After the meeting, Dylan approached him.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You were wrong.””
Dylan nodded.
“But you admitted it.””
A small silence passed.
“That matters.””
Dylan looked surprised.
Marcus walked away.
Not because everything was fixed.
But because for the first time, the truth belonged to everyone.
That evening, Marcus returned home.
His mother hugged him.
“You did what I couldn’t do.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
He smiled.
“We did.””
Then his phone buzzed.
A new email.
From the university.
May you like
Marcus opened it.
The first line made him stop breathing.
