Chapter 10: The Witness Who Disappeared

Marcus stared at the signature at the bottom of the old letter.

He read it again.

Then a third time.

He still couldn’t believe it.

“Mrs. Elaine Foster?””

His mother nodded slowly.

“She was the counselor at my school.””

Marcus looked confused.

“The counselor who signed the warning?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she tell anyone?””

His mother looked down.

“Because she tried.””

The answer surprised him.

“What happened?””

His mother sat back down.

“Elaine discovered what Mrs. Vance and Richard Hale were doing. She noticed students were losing opportunities while certain names kept appearing on recommendation lists.””

Marcus listened carefully.

“She collected evidence,” his mother continued.

“She planned to report everything.””

“Then why didn’t she?””

His mother touched the letter.

“Because someone threatened her job.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“Richard?””

His mother nodded.

“He told her that nobody would believe a school counselor accusing the people who funded the school.””

The same words.

The same fear.

The same system.

Marcus suddenly understood.

They weren’t just protecting Mrs. Vance.

They were protecting the entire structure around her.

The next morning, Marcus, Jordan, and Olivia met at a small coffee shop near campus.

They needed answers.

Not rumors.

Not guesses.

Proof.

Olivia placed her notebook on the table.

“We need Elaine Foster.””

Jordan searched through his laptop.

“I found her.””

Marcus leaned closer.

“Where is she?””

Jordan turned the screen.

“Working at a community center outside the city.””

Olivia looked surprised.

“She left education completely.””

Marcus frowned.

“After what happened?””

Jordan nodded.

“She disappeared from the school system two months after my mother’s case.””

Marcus looked at Olivia.

“Your mother’s case?””

Olivia hesitated.

“My mother also lost a scholarship opportunity.””

The silence returned.

Another family.

Another dream.

Another person hurt.

By the afternoon, they were standing outside a small community building.

Marcus knocked.

A woman in her sixties opened the door.

Her hair was silver.

Her expression was cautious.

“Yes?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Are you Elaine Foster?””

The woman froze.

For a second, fear crossed her face.

Then she slowly stepped outside.

“How do you know that name?””

Marcus held up the old letter.

Elaine looked at it.

And everything changed.

“You found it.””

Marcus nodded.

“We need your help.””

Elaine looked behind them.

Then quickly opened the door.

“Come inside.””

The room was small.

A few chairs.

A bookshelf.

A quiet place far away from the school she once worked at.

Elaine sat across from them.

“I wondered if someone would eventually find the truth.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell people?””

Elaine closed her eyes.

“Because I was scared.””

The honesty surprised him.

She didn’t pretend to be brave.

She didn’t pretend she had all the answers.

“I had a family,” she said.

“A mortgage. A career.””

Olivia leaned forward.

“But students lost their futures.””

Elaine looked down.

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“And I have regretted that every day.””

Marcus softened slightly.

“What happened exactly?””

Elaine opened an old drawer.

She pulled out a small folder.

“I kept copies.””

Inside were documents.

Emails.

Notes.

Meeting records.

Evidence.

Jordan stared.

“You had all this?””

Elaine nodded.

“I was waiting for the right person to find it.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why us?””

Elaine looked directly at him.

“Because you didn’t break.””

The words stayed with him.

She continued.

“Every student before you eventually gave up. They believed the lies.””

Marcus looked at the documents.

“But I didn’t.””

“No.””

Elaine shook her head.

“You stood there and told her the truth.””

Then Elaine pulled out one final document.

A list of names.

At the top was Marcus.

At the bottom was another name.

A name that made everyone in the room go silent.

Elaine whispered:

“This is the student Richard Hale has been protecting all along.””

Marcus looked at the page.

May you like

And realized the entire scheme had one final purpose.

To guarantee one person’s success.
