Chapter 9: My Mother’s Final Warning

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

My hands felt numb.

My mother had written Michael’s name.

Before he betrayed me.

Before tonight.

Before anyone knew what kind of person he would become.

I looked at Alexander.

“How?””

My voice barely came out.

“How did she know?””

Nobody answered immediately.

The ballroom felt too large.

Too quiet.

Alexander finally spoke.

“She didn’t know Michael would betray you specifically.””

He paused.

“She knew someone would try.””

I looked back at the paper.

My mother’s handwriting continued.

“My daughter has always believed the best in people. That is her greatest gift and her greatest danger.””

My eyes burned.

Because she was right.

I always looked for reasons to forgive.

Reasons to stay.

Reasons to believe someone could change.

Even when the evidence was right in front of me.

I continued reading.

“If someone tries to separate Olivia from her family, her company, or her inheritance, it is not because they love her.””

I stopped.

The words hurt.

Because Michael had spent years slowly doing exactly that.

He told me my brothers were too controlling.

He told me my family didn’t understand our marriage.

He convinced me distance was healthy.

I thought I was choosing peace.

I was being isolated.

Ryan looked at me.

“Liv.””

I folded the paper.

“I’m okay.””

But I wasn’t.

Not completely.

Alexander watched me carefully.

“There’s more.””

I looked up.

“What?””

He hesitated.

My stomach tightened.

“Why does everyone keep saying that?””

James opened another file.

“Because your mother left instructions regarding Michael.””

I stared.

“Regarding him?””

He nodded.

“She wanted us to investigate him if he ever gained access to the trust.””

I felt cold.

“Why?””

Alexander looked at me.

“Because before you married him, he had financial problems.””

I froze.

“No.””

James placed another document on the table.

I looked at the date.

Eight years ago.

Before our wedding.

Before Michael told me he had nothing to hide.

The records showed debts.

Loans.

Investors demanding repayment.

I whispered.

“He lied.””

Ryan nodded.

“He didn’t marry you because he knew your family name.””

I looked at him.

“He didn’t know.””

“Not at first.””

The words hit me.

“Not at first?””

Alexander looked uncomfortable.

“Someone told him.””

The room went silent.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

I looked between my brothers.

“Who told him about me?””

Alexander closed his eyes briefly.

“We don’t know yet.””

That was the first time I had ever heard uncertainty in his voice.

A new fear appeared.

Because if Michael discovered my identity through someone else...

Someone had helped him.

Someone had guided him.

The assistant suddenly approached.

“Mrs. Bennett?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

He held a phone.

“We found something else.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

He looked at Alexander.

“It came from Mr. Carter’s office.””

Alexander took the phone.

His face changed as he read.

Then he handed it to me.

I looked at the screen.

It was an email.

Sent six months before tonight.

The subject line made my blood run cold.

“Operation Olivia Bennett.””

I stared.

The email wasn’t romantic.

It wasn’t emotional.

It was a plan.

A timeline.

A strategy.

Michael had documented everything.

How to gain my trust.

How to convince me to transfer control.

How to make me believe leaving him was my idea.

My hands trembled.

At the bottom of the email was a name.

Not Michael.

Not Claire.

Someone else.

Someone who had been helping him.

I looked up slowly.

“Who is this?””

Alexander took the phone.

The second he saw the name, his expression changed.

“Impossible.””

James stepped closer.

“What?””

Alexander looked at me.

“Liv... this person was supposed to be on our side.””

The room went silent.

I looked at the name again.

A name I knew.

A name I trusted.

A name that made the entire betrayal feel even deeper.

Then my phone rang.

The caller ID appeared.

My heart stopped.

Because the person calling me was the same person listed in Michael’s secret plan.

May you like

And when I answered, the first words I heard were:

“Olivia, don’t trust your brothers.””
