Chapter 8: The Evidence He Forgot
The officers walked through the ballroom slowly.
Every step felt louder than the music that had stopped nearly an hour earlier.
Michael stood completely still.
His eyes moved from the officers to me.
Then to my brothers.
“You called them?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
His expression changed.
Because he realized something.
This wasn’t about tonight.
This was about everything before tonight.
The officer holding the folder approached.
“Mr. Michael Carter?””
Michael swallowed.
“Yes.””
The officer looked at the documents.
“We need to ask you some questions regarding unauthorized access to private records and suspected financial misconduct.””
The whispers returned.
But this time, Michael couldn’t control the room.
He couldn’t order people to stop talking.
He couldn’t smile and pretend everything was fine.
He looked at me.
“You’re really going to let this happen?””
I stared back.
“I’m letting the truth happen.””
The officer opened the folder.
“Mr. Carter, you were recorded entering a restricted office belonging to the Bennett family trust.””
Michael immediately shook his head.
“I had permission.””
Alexander interrupted.
“From whom?””
Michael looked at me.
I said nothing.
The officer continued.
“Your access authorization was under Mrs. Bennett’s identity.””
My stomach tightened.
I looked at Michael.
“You used my name.””
He didn’t answer.
The officer glanced at the papers.
“Did you sign these documents?””
Michael hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Claire stepped backward.
“I should leave.””
Ryan looked at her.
“You’re involved.””
Her eyes widened.
“I didn’t steal anything.””
James looked at her necklace.
“Maybe not.””
Claire touched the empty space where the necklace had been.
“But you accepted something you knew wasn’t yours.””
Her face turned red.
Michael suddenly snapped.
“Stop attacking her.””
I looked at him.
That was the first thing he protected.
Not me.
Not our marriage.
Her.
Even now.
The officer turned back to Michael.
“Mr. Carter, we need you to come with us for further questioning.””
Michael laughed.
“You think you can arrest me because of paperwork?””
Alexander looked at him.
“No.””
Michael looked confused.
“Then what?””
Alexander’s voice was calm.
“Because you forgot one thing.””
“What?””
“You never actually knew Olivia.””
I looked at Michael.
And for the first time, I saw him understand.
The quiet woman he underestimated was the one person he should have been afraid of disappointing.
The officers walked Michael toward the exit.
He stopped beside me.
“Olivia.””
I didn’t look away.
“I loved you.””
The words surprised everyone.
Even me.
Because a small part of me wanted to believe them.
But love without respect wasn’t enough.
I answered quietly.
“Maybe you did.””
His eyes softened.
“But you loved having me.””
That hurt him.
Because it was true.
He loved my support.
My patience.
My loyalty.
He loved what I gave him.
But he stopped seeing me.
Michael was escorted away.
Claire remained behind.
Alone.
She looked nothing like the confident woman who entered the gala.
I expected anger.
An insult.
A final attack.
Instead, she looked exhausted.
“Olivia.””
I turned.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“I need to tell you something.””
Ryan immediately stepped forward.
“You don’t need to tell her anything.””
But I stopped him.
“Let her speak.””
Claire looked down.
“Michael didn’t start this because of the company.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
She took a shaky breath.
“He was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Claire looked at me.
“Of losing control after your mother’s letter was discovered.””
My heart tightened.
“The letter?””
She nodded.
“He thought your mother left you something that could destroy him.””
Alexander exchanged a look with James.
I noticed.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Nobody answered.
That scared me.
Claire whispered.
“There was another page.””
I looked at Alexander.
“What page?””
His expression changed.
And I knew immediately.
He had known.
“Alexander.””
He looked away.
“Liv…”
“Show me.””
Slowly, he reached into the folder.
He pulled out a folded piece of paper.
My mother’s handwriting was on it.
But this time, the message wasn’t about protecting me.
It was about someone I never expected.
Alexander handed it to me.
May you like
And the first sentence made my entire body go cold.
“My dearest Olivia, if Michael Carter ever finds this page, do not trust anyone who claims to be protecting you.””
