Chapter 11: The Family Secret

For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe.

My father.

The man who taught me to ride a bicycle.

The man who held my hand when my mother passed away.

The man who told me family was the only thing that mattered.

Was standing in a security image inside the family archive.

The place where my mother’s final documents were stored.

“No.””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

Alexander looked at me carefully.

“Liv.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You’re wrong.””

Ryan looked at the image again.

“We verified it.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

My father had always been the person I trusted most.

Even when Michael convinced me my family was too involved, I never doubted my father.

James lowered his voice.

“There’s more.””

I looked at him.

I didn’t want more.

But I needed it.

He opened another file.

Inside were transaction records.

My father’s name appeared.

My stomach turned.

“What am I looking at?””

Alexander answered quietly.

“Transfers.””

“From where?””

He looked at me.

“From the Bennett trust.””

I felt like the room moved.

“No.””

Ryan reached for my arm.

“Liv.””

I pulled away.

Not because I was angry.

Because I needed space.

Everyone I loved seemed connected to a secret.

Michael.

Claire.

Now my father.

The phone in my hand buzzed.

A message appeared.

From the same unknown number.

“Now you understand why I called you.””

I stared.

Alexander saw my expression.

“What did they say?””

I showed him.

His face became serious.

“They’re watching us.””

I looked at him.

“Who are they?””

Nobody answered.

That scared me more than anything.

Because my brothers always had answers.

Tonight, they had none.

I left the ballroom.

I needed air.

The cold Manhattan night hit my face.

For the first time all evening, I was alone.

I looked at the city lights.

Eight years.

I had built a life around people I thought I knew.

My husband.

My family.

My closest friends.

But maybe I only knew the versions they wanted me to see.

The door behind me opened.

I turned.

Alexander walked out.

“I know you’re angry.””

I said nothing.

He stood beside me.

“I would be too.””

“Did you know about my father?””

“No.””

I studied his face.

“Did you know about the second letter?””

He looked away.

A second too long.

That was enough.

“You did.””

Alexander sighed.

“Not the contents.””

“But you knew it existed.””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because your mother asked us not to.””

I looked at him.

“My mother?””

“She said if the time came, you had to choose the truth yourself.””

I laughed sadly.

“Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me.””

Alexander looked at me.

“Because they are.””

“Then why does it feel like everyone is hiding me from my own life?””

He had no answer.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed immediately.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“Where?””

He looked at me.

“It’s your father.””

My heart stopped.

“What about him?””

Alexander lowered the phone.

“He wants to meet.””

“Why?””

His eyes darkened.

“Because he says Michael wasn’t working alone.””

I felt a chill.

“Who was helping him?””

Alexander looked toward the city.

Then back at me.

“He says the person behind everything is someone we all trusted.””

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time from my father.

May you like

Only five words.

“Come alone. Trust nobody.””
