Chapter 5: The Letter From My Mother

The mention of my mother’s name changed everything.

For years, Michael had avoided talking about her.

He always said the past was the past.

He told me I needed to focus on our future.

But now I wondered if he had been trying to make me forget because he knew what she left behind.

“What did he try to take?”” I asked.

Alexander didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more.

My oldest brother was always direct.

When he hesitated, it meant the truth was worse than expected.

James closed the folder.

“Let’s move somewhere private.””

I looked at Michael.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“I’m done being taken somewhere private to hear another lie.””

Alexander nodded slowly.

“Then we do this here.””

Michael’s face hardened.

“You’re humiliating me.””

I looked at him.

“You slapped me in front of strangers.””

My voice shook.

“But somehow I’m the one humiliating you?””

Nobody spoke.

Michael looked down.

For once, he had no comeback.

Alexander removed a small envelope from his briefcase.

It was old.

The edges were worn.

My breath caught.

I knew that handwriting.

My mother’s handwriting.

“Where did you get that?””

Alexander looked at me.

“She left it with me.””

I reached for it.

My fingers trembled.

“She said I should only give it to you when someone tried to take away what was yours.””

I stared at the envelope.

The room around me disappeared.

For a moment, I wasn’t at a charity gala.

I was twenty-four years old again.

Sitting beside my mother’s hospital bed.

Holding her hand.

Promising her I would be okay.

I opened the letter.

The first line broke me.

“My Olivia, if you are reading this, someone has made you question your own worth.””

My vision blurred.

I kept reading.

“She was always like that.

My mother knew me better than anyone.

She knew I spent my life making other people comfortable.

Even when they hurt me.

Even when they took from me.

Michael watched me silently.

“What does it say?””

I looked up.

The man who had once promised to protect me was now asking about my mother’s final words.

I folded the letter.

“It says she knew someone would try.””

His face changed.

“Try what?””

“To convince me I was nothing without them.””

Silence.

Claire suddenly stepped forward.

“Michael, maybe we should leave.””

He looked at her.

“Why?””

The question surprised her.

“Because this is getting out of control.””

Michael stared at her.

“No.””

Something in his voice changed.

“You knew about this.””

Claire looked nervous.

“I knew you had a plan.””

My heart sank.

“A plan?””

Michael looked at Claire.

“Don’t.””

But it was too late.

She had already exposed him.

I stepped closer.

“What plan?””

Claire looked between us.

Then she whispered.

“He was going to divorce you.””

I felt nothing at first.

Just emptiness.

Michael immediately interrupted.

“That’s not true.””

Claire continued.

“And after the divorce, he was going to claim the shares.””

The room erupted with whispers.

Michael grabbed her arm.

“Stop talking.””

She pulled away.

“You promised me.””

Everyone went silent.

I looked at Michael.

“Promised her what?””

He didn’t answer.

Claire’s eyes filled with anger.

“You said once Olivia signed everything over, we could finally be together.””

The pain wasn’t from losing him.

That happened months ago.

The pain came from realizing every moment I had doubted myself had been intentional.

Michael stepped toward me.

“Olivia, listen.””

I raised my hand.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

Because for the first time, I wasn’t afraid of him.

Alexander quietly took the letter from my hand.

“Liv.””

I looked at him.

“There’s one more thing.””

“What?””

He turned the page.

My mother’s final note had a second section.

A section I had never seen.

Alexander’s voice lowered.

“She didn’t just leave you protection.””

He looked at Michael.

“She left you control.””

Michael’s face changed.

“Control of what?””

May you like

Alexander answered.

“The entire Bennett family trust.””
