Chapter 2: The Wife He Never Knew
Michael stared at the envelope in Alexander’s hand as if it contained a weapon.
The ballroom remained silent.
Even Claire stopped pretending she was comfortable.
She moved closer to Michael and whispered.
“Why does Alexander Bennett have something for you?””
Michael ignored her.
His eyes stayed on me.
“Olivia, what is this?””
I looked at him.
The question almost made me laugh.
After years of marriage, he was finally curious about my life.
“I could ask you the same thing.””
His face hardened.
“This isn’t the time for games.””
Alexander stepped forward.
“This isn’t a game.””
He opened the envelope and removed several documents.
Michael immediately recognized the paperwork.
His expression shifted.
“What is that?””
James answered before Alexander could.
“Records.””
Michael swallowed.
“Records of what?””
“Your company.””
The room became even quieter.
Michael had built Carter International over the last decade.
He loved telling people he started from nothing.
He loved reminding everyone that he was a self-made success.
But there was one thing he never told them.
The reason his company survived its hardest years.
The reason investors trusted him.
The reason banks approved his biggest loans.
Me.
I had invested in his company before we got married.
I had quietly helped him build everything.
And he never knew.
Michael looked at me.
“You?””
I didn’t respond.
Claire looked confused.
“What is he talking about?””
Alexander turned toward her.
“The woman you insulted tonight owns more of Carter International than you realize.””
Claire’s smile disappeared.
Michael shook his head.
“No.””
His voice became louder.
“That’s impossible.””
I finally spoke.
“Why?””
He stared at me.
“Because you never told me.””
I nodded.
“That was the point.””
His face twisted with anger.
“You lied to me.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“I lied?””
My voice rose.
“You told everyone you built your company alone. You erased my name from every conversation. You acted like I was just the wife standing beside you at events.””
Michael looked away.
“You never cared about business.””
A painful laugh escaped me.
“I cared enough to save your business when you were about to lose it.””
The guests around us exchanged shocked looks.
Claire looked at Michael.
“You said you built everything yourself.””
Michael’s eyes flashed.
“Claire, not now.””
Alexander folded his arms.
“Actually, now is exactly the time.””
He handed one document to Michael.
“Your board received notice this morning.””
Michael looked down.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
“What notice?””
James answered.
“That Olivia Bennett has activated her voting rights.””
Michael went completely still.
For years, I had avoided using my family’s influence.
I had watched Michael take credit.
I had watched him slowly become someone I barely recognized.
But the moment his hand touched my face in front of hundreds of people, something inside me broke.
Michael lowered the paper.
“You planned this?””
“No.””
I looked him directly in the eyes.
“You did.””
His expression changed.
He remembered every insult.
Every time he told me I was lucky to have him.
Every time he dismissed my opinions.
Every time Claire walked into my home like she belonged there.
Claire suddenly stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous. Michael, don’t let them intimidate you.””
Alexander looked at her.
“And you are?””
Claire lifted her chin.
“I’m Claire.””
Ryan gave a cold smile.
“We know.””
Her confidence faded.
Ryan continued.
“We also know where that necklace came from.””
Claire touched it nervously.
Michael noticed.
For the first time that night, he looked at her differently.
“Claire.””
She turned.
“What?””
“Take it off.””
The entire room watched.
Claire’s face changed.
“Michael—”
“Take it off.””
Her hands trembled as she removed the necklace.
I watched the diamond fall into her palm.
The same diamond I had worn on our anniversary.
The same diamond he had sworn represented our love.
Then Michael looked at me.
His voice was quieter.
“Olivia... why didn’t you tell me?””
I looked at the man who had just slapped me.
“Because I wanted to know if you loved me without knowing my last name.””
For the first time, Michael had no answer.
Then a phone rang.
One of his assistants rushed through the crowd, looking terrified.
“Mr. Carter... you need to see this immediately.””
Michael frowned.
“What happened?””
The assistant handed him the phone.
Michael read the message.
And the confidence disappeared from his face.
Because the message wasn’t about the gala.
It was about something much worse.
Something he had done behind my back.
Something I didn’t even know about yet.
Michael slowly looked up at me.
“Olivia...””
May you like
His voice shook.
“Who else knows about this?””
