Chapter 4: The Agreement He Hid

The ballroom doors closed behind us, but nobody moved.

Claire’s words remained hanging in the air.

“He planned to take something much bigger from you.””

I looked at Michael.

For years, I had defended him.

I had explained away his cold moments.

His long nights.

His sudden distance.

I had convinced myself that every marriage went through difficult seasons.

But standing there, with my cheek still burning and my husband looking terrified, I finally saw the truth.

This was never a difficult season.

This was a pattern.

“Michael,” I said quietly, “what agreement is she talking about?””

His lips parted.

Nothing came out.

That was the answer.

Alexander stepped forward.

“You have ten seconds.””

Michael glared at him.

“You don’t threaten me.””

Ryan laughed softly.

“Tonight you slapped your wife in front of hundreds of witnesses. I think you already made your biggest mistake.””

Michael’s eyes moved around the room.

He realized everyone was watching.

Not just guests.

Board members.

Investors.

People whose opinions could affect his entire career.

He lowered his voice.

“Olivia, we need to leave.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The word surprised him.

“No?””

“No more private conversations. No more explanations behind closed doors. You wanted everyone to see me tonight.””

I touched my cheek.

“So everyone can see the truth too.””

A photographer near the stage lowered his camera.

Michael noticed.

“Turn those off.””

The photographer hesitated.

Alexander looked at him.

“Keep recording.””

Michael’s face darkened.

“You’re enjoying this.””

Alexander’s expression stayed calm.

“No. I’m documenting it.””

The assistant who had delivered the phone message stepped forward again.

“Mr. Carter, the board members are asking for confirmation.””

Michael turned sharply.

“What confirmation?””

The assistant looked uncomfortable.

“Whether the emergency shareholder review is proceeding tonight.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Emergency shareholder review.

Michael looked at me.

“You already started this?””

I frowned.

“I didn’t.””

Alexander answered.

“We did.””

Michael laughed bitterly.

“Of course.””

He looked at my brothers.

“You’ve been waiting for this.””

“No,” James said.

“We’ve been waiting for you to give us a reason.””

Michael’s eyes moved back to me.

“I can explain everything.””

“Then explain.””

He stayed silent.

Again.

I stepped closer.

“What did you sign?””

His face tightened.

“It wasn’t what you think.””

“That sentence usually means it’s exactly what I think.””

Claire looked uncomfortable.

She had been standing beside him all night.

Now she looked like she wanted to disappear.

I turned toward her.

“You knew.””

Claire looked away.

“Olivia...””

“You knew.””

She swallowed.

“I didn’t know all the details.””

Michael suddenly snapped.

“Claire, stop talking.””

The room went quiet.

Because that wasn’t a warning.

It was panic.

Alexander noticed too.

“Interesting.””

Michael ignored him.

“Olivia, please listen to me.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

Please.

Again.

The same man who had ordered me to apologize.

The same man who had raised his hand at me.

Now he was asking me to listen.

“What did you do, Michael?””

His eyes dropped.

“I created a protection agreement.””

“For who?””

He didn’t answer.

“For who?””

His voice was barely audible.

“For the company.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

He looked up.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand perfectly.””

I turned toward my brothers.

“He used my investment.””

Alexander nodded.

“And he tried to move ownership.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Michael immediately stepped forward.

“That’s not true.””

James opened another file.

“Then explain these transfer documents.””

Michael froze.

The documents were printed.

Signed.

Filed.

My name appeared on them.

But my signature looked wrong.

Different.

Almost copied.

I stared at the page.

“That isn’t my signature.””

No one spoke.

The room changed.

Because everyone understood the same thing at the same time.

Michael hadn’t just betrayed me.

He had used my identity.

Michael’s face turned pale.

“Olivia, wait.””

I looked at him.

“Did you forge my signature?””

He didn’t answer.

And silence was all I needed.

Then Ryan’s phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“Alexander.””

“What?””

Ryan turned the phone around.

“Someone just accessed the Bennett family vault records.””

My heart stopped.

“What vault records?””

Ryan looked at me.

“The ones containing your mother’s final documents.””

I felt the air disappear from my lungs.

My mother had passed away before Michael and I married.

Everything she left me had been protected.

Everything except one thing.

A private letter she told my brothers to give me only when I needed it.

Alexander’s voice became serious.

“Michael didn’t just go after your company.””

May you like

He looked at the documents.

“He went after your inheritance.””
