Chapter 3: The Secret Behind My Silence

The question hung between us.

Who else knew?

I watched Michael’s face carefully.

For the first time since I met him, he looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Afraid.

The assistant stood beside him, waiting.

Michael locked his phone.

“We need to talk privately.””

I almost smiled.

“Now you want privacy?””

His jaw tightened.

“Olivia, please.””

That word surprised me more than anything else.

Michael Carter never said please.

Not to employees.

Not to business partners.

Not to me.

Alexander stepped closer.

“She’s not going anywhere alone with you.””

Michael looked at him.

“This is my wife.””

Alexander’s expression didn’t change.

“And tonight you forgot that.””

The words hit harder than a shout.

Michael looked away.

Claire quietly moved toward the exit.

Ryan noticed.

“Where are you going?””

She stopped.

“I think I’ve been here long enough.””

James laughed once.

“You mean you’re leaving before everyone learns the truth?””

Claire’s face turned pale.

“What truth?””

James pulled out his phone.

“I think you know.””

Michael looked between them.

“What is he talking about?””

No one answered.

I felt something cold settle in my stomach.

Because even I didn’t know everything my brothers had discovered.

Alexander looked at me.

“Liv, there’s something you need to see.””

He handed me a tablet.

My fingers hesitated.

“What is it?””

“Your husband’s financial records.””

Michael immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Everyone turned toward him.

That one word said more than anything else.

I looked at him.

“Don’t what?””

His silence answered.

My heart sank.

Alexander unlocked the screen.

The first document appeared.

A transfer.

A large one.

From a private account.

My private account.

I stared at the number.

Then at Michael.

“When?””

He didn’t answer.

“When did you access my money?””

His face hardened again.

“You’re misunderstanding.””

“Am I?””

I scrolled through the documents.

There were several transfers.

Payments I never approved.

Investments made under my name.

Michael’s voice became defensive.

“I was protecting our future.””

“Our future?””

I looked at him.

“You used my money without telling me.””

“I was your husband.””

“And that gave you permission?””

The guests around us watched quietly.

The man who had proudly controlled every room he entered was now struggling to explain himself.

Claire stepped closer.

“Michael, maybe we should leave.””

He ignored her.

His eyes stayed on me.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I made a mistake eight years ago.””

His expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

I looked at Alexander.

Then James.

Then Ryan.

They all knew.

They had been waiting for me to decide.

I took a breath.

“Michael, there’s something you never understood about me.””

He said nothing.

“I never needed your money.””

The ballroom doors opened.

A man in a black suit entered carrying a folder.

He walked directly toward us.

“Mrs. Bennett?””

Michael frowned.

“Mrs. Bennett?””

The man handed me the folder.

“Your legal team asked me to deliver this personally.””

Michael stared.

“Legal team?””

I opened the folder.

Inside was a document with a familiar signature.

My signature.

And underneath it was a title that made Michael’s face lose all color.

Alexander watched him carefully.

“You thought Olivia was just your wife.””

James stepped closer.

“You never realized she was also the person who could remove you.””

Michael looked at the document.

Then at me.

“What did you do?””

I slowly closed the folder.

Before I could answer, Claire suddenly grabbed Michael’s arm.

“Michael, tell her.””

Everyone turned.

Her voice shook.

“Tell her about the agreement.””

My heart stopped.

“Agreement?””

Michael’s face changed instantly.

Claire realized she had said too much.

Alexander narrowed his eyes.

“What agreement?””

Michael stepped back.

For the first time that night, he looked trapped.

Then Claire whispered the words that changed everything.

“It wasn’t just the necklace.””

May you like

She looked at me.

“He planned to take something much bigger from you.””
