Chapter 12: The Truth My Father Buried

I stared at my father’s message.

Come alone.

Trust nobody.

Three words that should have sounded impossible.

But after everything that happened tonight, nothing felt impossible anymore.

Alexander looked at my phone.

“You’re not going alone.””

I looked at him.

“You just told me my father may be involved.””

“I know.””

“And you expect me to bring you?””

His face tightened.

“I expect you to stay alive.””

The words silenced me.

Because beneath all the secrets and mistakes, I saw something familiar.

My brother was scared.

Not for the family name.

For me.

“I need answers.””

Alexander nodded.

“Then we get them.””

Two hours later, I stood outside an old Bennett property on the edge of the city.

The house had belonged to my grandparents.

My father had sold it years ago.

Or at least, that was what I thought.

The lights were on.

My father was waiting inside.

I walked through the front door.

He looked older than I remembered.

Tired.

Broken.

“Olivia.””

I stopped.

Hearing my name from him almost made me cry.

Almost.

“What happened?””

He looked at Alexander behind me.

“I told you to come alone.””

Alexander stepped forward.

“She doesn’t go anywhere alone anymore.””

My father looked down.

Then sighed.

“Maybe that’s for the best.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

He walked toward an old wooden table.

On it was a folder.

“You deserve the truth.””

I didn’t move.

“I’ve heard that a lot tonight.””

He looked hurt.

“I know.””

My father opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Emails.

The same kind of evidence that had destroyed my marriage.

But this time, the name on the documents wasn’t Michael.

It was mine.

“What is this?””

My father sat down.

“Your mother discovered something before she died.””

“What?””

“That someone was trying to access the trust.””

I looked at him.

“Michael?””

He shook his head.

“Before Michael.””

The room became cold.

“Then who?””

My father looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

That answer terrified me.

Because nobody knew.

Everyone was searching.

Everyone was afraid.

He continued.

“Your mother believed the person was close to the family.””

I looked at Alexander.

“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””

My father’s eyes filled with regret.

“Because your mother asked us not to.””

I laughed quietly.

“Again.””

He looked down.

“She was afraid if you knew, you would stop trusting everyone.””

I stared at him.

“And now?””

He pushed the folder toward me.

“Now I think she was wrong.””

I opened it.

The first document was a financial record.

The second was an email.

The third was a photograph.

My hands froze.

Because the photograph showed Michael.

But he wasn’t alone.

Standing beside him was the person who had helped him create the plan.

The person who had been guiding him from the beginning.

The person whose name appeared on every document.

I looked at my father.

Then Alexander.

Nobody spoke.

Because we all recognized the person.

My father whispered:

“I tried to stop this years ago.””

My voice shook.

“Why didn’t you?””

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“Because the person behind it was your mother’s closest friend.””

I stared at the photograph.

And everything I thought I knew collapsed.

Because the person who destroyed my marriage...

Who manipulated Michael...

May you like

Who targeted my inheritance...

Was someone I had called family my entire life.
