Chapter 8: The Evidence Hidden in the Basement
Vanessa tried to take the folder.
I stepped back.
“No.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“Emily, give me that.””
“Why?””
“Because you don’t understand what you’re looking at.””
I looked down at the document.
“No. I understand perfectly.””
Her signature was there.
Her handwriting.
Her authorization.
Everything she had denied.
“You used my name.””
Vanessa’s face went cold.
“I did what I had to do.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Not because they surprised me.
Because she finally admitted it.
“You admit it?””
She looked at me.
“You think life is simple?””
I laughed.
“My life became complicated because of you.””
Mark stepped between us.
“Vanessa, stop.””
She ignored him.
“You have no idea what your father was facing.””
I looked at Mark.
“And you do?””
He didn’t answer.
That silence was enough.
I walked toward the door.
“I’m taking these documents.””
Vanessa moved quickly.
“No.””
I stopped.
She had never sounded desperate before.
“What are you hiding?””
She looked away.
Nothing.
Then I heard footsteps behind me.
Daniel.
He walked into the house.
His face looked exhausted.
When he saw the folder in my hand, he stopped.
“You found it.””
I stared at him.
“You knew.””
He nodded.
“I knew Vanessa signed some documents.””
My heart sank.
“You knew she used my identity?””
He closed his eyes.
“Not at first.””
I felt anger rising.
“When did you find out?””
He didn’t answer.
“Dad.””
His voice became quiet.
“Six months ago.””
I stepped back.
Six months.
“You knew for six months?””
“I was trying to fix it.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You were trying to hide it.””
Daniel looked broken.
But I couldn’t feel sorry.
Not yet.
“What else don’t I know?””
He looked toward the basement door.
That small glance caught my attention.
“What’s down there?””
Daniel immediately said:
“Nothing.””
Too fast.
I walked toward the basement.
Vanessa stepped in front of me.
“Emily.””
I stared at her.
“Move.””
She didn’t.
“Don’t do this.””
“Why?””
Her silence answered.
I opened the basement door.
The smell hit me first.
Old paper.
Dust.
Storage.
I turned on the light.
Boxes lined the walls.
My father followed behind.
“Emily, please.””
I ignored him.
I started opening boxes.
Old tax records.
Business papers.
Photographs.
Then I found a locked metal container.
My name was written on the top.
Emily Carter.
My hands went cold.
“Why is my name on this?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel looked terrified.
Vanessa looked angry.
I grabbed the container.
“What is inside?””
Daniel whispered:
“Your mother’s records.””
I froze.
“My mother?””
He nodded.
“She left something before she died.””
I stared at him.
“Something about what?””
He looked at the container.
“About the reason your identity became valuable.””
I felt sick.
“My identity?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Emily, your mother knew something about Mark’s business.””
Mark’s face changed.
“Daniel.””
But my father continued.
“She kept evidence.””
I looked at the locked box.
All these years.
A hidden basement.
A locked container.
My mother’s secrets.
I picked it up.
“Open it.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t have the key.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She immediately looked away.
“You do.””
The room became silent.
Then Vanessa slowly reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small key.
My heart dropped.
She had been carrying it.
She had always known.
I grabbed the key.
But before I could unlock the box, Vanessa spoke.
“Emily.””
I looked at her.
Her eyes were different.
Almost scared.
“If you open that box…”
She stopped.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“You won’t just destroy me.””
I waited.
May you like
She whispered:
“You’ll destroy your father too.””
