Chapter 3: The Secret They Buried

I barely slept that night.

I sat on my bedroom floor with my laptop open, staring at my credit report.

Every few seconds, I refreshed the page.

I wanted it to disappear.

I wanted all of it to be a mistake.

But the accounts remained.

The loans remained.

The damage was real.

At 2:13 in the morning, I found another transaction.

A payment from my savings account.

A payment toward the SUV.

My money had been used to pay for the car they bought using my name.

I covered my mouth to stop myself from crying.

Not because of the money.

Because of the betrayal.

The next morning, I walked into the kitchen with my laptop in my hand.

Daniel and Vanessa were already sitting there.

Almost like they were waiting.

Vanessa looked annoyed.

“Are you still doing this?””

I placed the laptop on the table.

“I found more.””

Daniel looked at the screen.

“What?””

I turned it toward him.

“Payments.””

His face changed.

Vanessa immediately reached for the laptop.

I pulled it back.

“No.””

Her voice became sharp.

“Emily.””

“No. You don’t get to control this anymore.””

Daniel sighed.

“Please stop fighting with us.””

I looked at him.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That I’m not fighting with you.””

I pointed at the screen.

“I’m trying to find out why my own father did this to me.””

The words hit him.

For a moment, he looked ashamed.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“Your father made mistakes. But you need to think about the bigger picture.””

I turned toward her.

“What bigger picture?””

“The family.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You keep saying that like family means one person sacrifices while everyone else takes.””

Vanessa stood.

“You are being selfish.””

I stared at her.

“I saved that money for two years.””

“And we needed it.””

“You needed my money.””

“Yes.””

The answer came so easily that it shocked me.

She didn’t even deny it.

Daniel looked at her.

“Vanessa.””

“What?”” she snapped.

“She needs to understand.””

I felt my stomach twist.

“Understand what?””

Vanessa walked to the cabinet and opened a drawer.

She pulled out a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Emily Carter.

I stepped forward.

“What is that?””

Daniel immediately stood.

“Vanessa, don’t.””

That was the first time I heard fear in his voice.

She ignored him.

“You want the truth?””

She dropped the envelope onto the table.

“Fine.””

My hands felt numb as I opened it.

Inside were copies of documents.

Old documents.

My personal information.

My social security number.

My signature sample.

I looked up slowly.

“How did you get these?””

Nobody answered.

Then I noticed a date.

Three years earlier.

Before I ever saved for the camera.

Before the SUV.

Before the loan.

My voice shook.

“You’ve been planning this for years.””

Daniel looked away.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Not guilt.

Calculation.

“You should be grateful we handled things.””

I stared at her.

“Handled things?””

She leaned closer.

“You think the world cares about your little dreams?””

My eyes filled with tears.

“That camera was my dream.””

“And we had bigger needs.””

I closed the envelope.

“No.””

Vanessa frowned.

“No?””

I stood up.

“No more.””

Daniel looked alarmed.

“Emily, what are you going to do?””

I picked up my phone.

“I’m going to report the identity theft.””

The room went completely silent.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked down.

His face turned pale.

“What is it?”” Vanessa asked.

He didn’t answer.

I watched him slowly open the message.

Then he looked at me.

“Emily…”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What?””

He turned the phone around.

The message wasn’t from the bank.

It was from an unknown number.

And it contained a photograph of a document I had never seen before.

A document with my signature.

And a sentence underneath:

*“You should ask your father why he signed this first.””*
