Chapter 14: The Meeting They Never Expected

The next morning, I stood outside the company headquarters holding my mother’s documents.

Six months ago, I was saving money for a camera.

Now I was walking into a board meeting that could change everything.

I still felt like the same person.

The same girl who worked weekend shifts.

The same girl who packed homemade lunches.

The same girl who believed family meant safety.

But something had changed.

I stopped waiting for people to protect me.

I walked inside.

The receptionist looked at the schedule.

“Can I help you?””

“My name is Emily Carter.””

She checked the list.

Her expression changed.

“Ms. Carter?””

“Yes.””

She immediately stood.

“The board is waiting.””

I walked into the conference room.

Daniel was already there.

Vanessa sat beside him.

Mark was at the opposite end of the table.

When he saw me, his expression hardened.

“You really came.””

I placed the documents down.

“Yes.””

He laughed quietly.

“You have no idea what you’re walking into.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I opened the folder.

“But I know exactly why I’m here.””

The board members entered one by one.

Thomas stood.

“Before we begin, I want everyone to understand that Emily Carter has legal authority based on her mother’s ownership agreement.””

The room became silent.

Mark leaned forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

Thomas looked at him.

“You will have an opportunity to respond.””

The meeting began.

Documents were presented.

Transactions reviewed.

Emails displayed.

Every lie they had built started collapsing.

Then Mark spoke.

“You’re making a mistake.””

I looked at him.

“A mistake?””

“Yes.””

He pointed at Daniel.

“Your father made bad choices because he was trying to save the company.””

I turned toward Daniel.

He looked down.

“And you?””

Mark smiled.

“I was trying to save everyone.””

I almost laughed.

“You keep using that word.””

“What word?””

“Save.””

I looked around the room.

“You don’t save people by taking away their choices.””

Nobody spoke.

Mark’s expression changed.

“You’re emotional.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I’m informed.””

Thomas placed the final document on the table.

“This is the forensic report.””

Mark stopped smiling.

The report showed unauthorized transfers.

False signatures.

Hidden accounts.

The room erupted.

Board members started asking questions.

Mark looked at Daniel.

“You said she would never find out.””

My father closed his eyes.

That sentence was enough.

Everyone heard it.

I looked at Daniel.

“You knew.””

He whispered:

“I was trying to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

That hurt him.

But it was true.

The board voted to suspend Mark immediately pending investigation.

Then Thomas turned toward me.

“There is one final matter.””

I looked at him.

“What now?””

He handed me a small box.

I recognized it.

My mother’s handwriting was on top.

*For Emily, when she is ready.*

I opened it.

Inside was a memory card.

My heart stopped.

“What is this?””

Thomas looked serious.

“Your mother recorded a message.””

I inserted it into the laptop.

The screen showed my mother.

Older.

Tired.

But smiling.

My eyes filled instantly.

“Emily…”

Her voice.

After all these years.

“I hope you are watching this because you are safe.””

I covered my mouth.

She continued.

“If you found this, it means someone tried to take away your choices.””

She paused.

“But remember this.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“Money can be stolen. Documents can be forged. Trust can be broken.””

A tear fell down my face.

“But your voice belongs to you.””

The video stopped.

Nobody moved.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

I opened it.

May you like

One sentence.

*You think Mark was the person who betrayed you? Ask your father what happened the night your mother died.*
