Chapter 6: The Person Watching Me

I stared at the message until my hands went numb.

Someone had been inside my room.

Someone had taken a picture of my private things.

My savings notebook.

The place where I wrote down every dollar I saved.

The place where I recorded my dream.

I looked around the kitchen.

Suddenly, my own house felt unfamiliar.

“Who sent that?”” Daniel asked.

I didn’t answer.

Vanessa walked closer.

“What does it say?””

I locked my phone.

“Nothing.””

Her expression changed.

“You don’t trust us?””

I looked at her.

“No.””

The answer came faster than I expected.

Daniel looked hurt.

But I couldn’t care anymore.

Trust was something they had spent years destroying.

I grabbed my keys.

“Where are you going?”” Daniel asked.

“A hotel.””

“You can’t leave.””

I turned around.

“Watch me.””

He stepped forward.

“Emily, please. We can fix this.””

I shook my head.

“You said that before.””

I walked toward the door.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“You don’t understand what you’re getting yourself into.””

I stopped.

Slowly turned around.

“What does that mean?””

She didn’t answer.

But her face did.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not anger.

Not frustration.

Fear.

“Vanessa.””

She looked away.

“Nothing.””

I stared at her.

“You know something.””

“No.””

“You do.””

Daniel looked at his wife.

And that small movement told me everything.

“You both know who sent that message.””

Silence.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Emily, you need to stay away from Mark.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because he knows more than he should.””

I checked into a small hotel across town.

I barely slept.

Every sound outside the door made me sit up.

Every notification made my heart race.

At 6:30 the next morning, I called Rachel from fraud investigations.

“I received a threat.””

Her voice immediately became serious.

“Can you describe it?””

I sent her the image.

A few minutes later, she called back.

“Emily, we need you to preserve everything.””

“What does that mean?””

“Do not delete messages. Do not confront anyone.””

I looked out the window.

“Even my family?””

“Especially anyone connected to the accounts.””

The word connected stayed in my mind.

Connected.

After I hung up, I opened my email.

There was one new message.

No subject.

No sender name.

Just an attachment.

I almost didn’t open it.

But curiosity won.

The file was a scanned contract.

At the top was a title:

*Identity Authorization Agreement*

My hands started shaking.

Because the signature at the bottom wasn’t just mine.

There was another signature beside it.

Daniel Carter.

My father.

I zoomed in.

The date.

Three years ago.

The same day the first identity check was created.

But then I noticed something else.

A handwritten note in the corner.

A note that had been added after the contract was signed.

Three words.

Three words that changed everything.

*“Emily is unaware.””*

I stared at the screen.

Someone had written that about me.

Someone had been making plans around my life.

Then another message appeared.

This time from Daniel.

May you like

Only five words.

*“Please don’t trust Vanessa.””*
