Chapter 12: The Identity That Wasn’t Mine
I couldn’t understand what Rachel had just said.
“Registered to me?””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
Rachel sounded serious.
“Emily, the system shows the applications came from an account connected to your personal information.””
I looked at the people around me.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
Mark.
All of them were watching me.
Waiting.
“Who created the account?””
Rachel paused.
“That’s the problem.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“What?””
“The account was created before you were eighteen.””
I felt cold.
“That can’t be right.””
“It was opened using your information.””
I looked at Daniel.
My father immediately looked away.
I knew.
He knew something.
“Rachel, can you send me everything?””
“I already did.””
My phone buzzed.
A new email appeared.
I opened it.
There was a document attached.
The title made my heart stop.
*Custodial Financial Authorization.*
I opened the file.
The first page showed my name.
But underneath it was another name.
Daniel Carter.
My father.
I looked at him.
“You signed this.””
He didn’t respond.
“Dad.””
His face changed.
“I was your legal guardian.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
He sat down.
“I signed documents when you were younger.””
“What documents?””
He looked at the floor.
“Your mother’s assets.””
My anger returned.
“So you controlled everything.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
I held up the paper.
“You had access to my information.””
Daniel whispered:
“Yes.””
The word hurt.
Because it explained everything.
The documents.
The accounts.
The identity checks.
But something still didn’t make sense.
I looked at Rachel’s email again.
The account was created before I turned eighteen.
The loans happened later.
Someone had access for years.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You said you were helping him.””
She stayed silent.
Mark stepped closer.
“Emily, you need to understand something.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Your father didn’t create the first account.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Don’t.””
Mark ignored him.
“Your mother did.””
I froze.
“What?””
He continued.
“Before she died, she created a protection account.””
My heart raced.
“A protection account?””
“Yes.””
I looked at the journal.
The letter.
The hidden box.
Everything connected.
Mark pointed toward the documents.
“She knew people would try to take what belonged to you.””
I stared at him.
“Then why did everyone try to access it?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone had a different reason.
Greed.
Fear.
Desperation.
Betrayal.
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you know about this account?””
His silence was enough.
“You did.””
He nodded.
“Your mother told me.””
“And you still let them use my identity.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I thought I could fix it.””
I shook my head.
“You keep saying that.””
I closed the laptop.
“But you never fixed anything.””
The room was quiet.
Then Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“There’s something you don’t know.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then at Mark.
“The account wasn’t just protection.””
My stomach tightened.
“What was it?””
She swallowed.
“It contained evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
She walked toward the old folder.
“Everything Mark did.””
Mark’s expression changed.
For the first time, he looked scared.
Vanessa opened her mouth.
But before she could speak, the front door slammed open.
Everyone turned.
A man stood there.
Holding a stack of papers.
Rachel’s voice came through my phone.
“Emily?””
I whispered:
“Yes?””
The stranger looked directly at me.
Then he said:
“Emily Carter?””
I froze.
“Yes?””
He held up the papers.
“I’m here because your mother left instructions.””
Nobody moved.
Then he looked at Daniel.
“And those instructions include what happens if your father ever betrays your trust.””
The room went silent.
Because the man wasn’t looking at me.
May you like
He was looking at Daniel.
And my father looked terrified.
