Chapter 15: The Truth I Was Never Supposed to Know

I read the message again.

And again.

The words refused to make sense.

*Ask your father what happened the night your mother died.*

My entire body went cold.

I slowly looked at Daniel.

He saw my face.

And immediately knew.

“What did it say?””

I didn’t answer.

I handed him the phone.

He read it.

The color disappeared from his face.

Vanessa stood.

“What happened?””

Daniel didn’t respond.

I watched him carefully.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

For a moment, he looked like he wanted to lie.

But then he stopped.

“I never told you everything.””

My heart sank.

Of course.

Another secret.

Another hidden truth.

“What happened that night?””

Daniel sat down.

His hands shook.

“Your mother called me.””

“When?””

“The night before the accident.””

I froze.

“Accident?””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

I stared.

“You told me she lost control of the car.””

“She did.””

“But?””

He swallowed.

“But she called me first.””

The room became silent.

“What did she say?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“She said she found proof against Mark.””

I felt sick.

“Then what?””

“I told her to wait.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

I stepped back.

“You knew she was in danger.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I thought I could fix it.””

The same words.

Again.

Always the same words.

“I went to meet Mark that night.””

My heart stopped.

“You met him?””

Daniel nodded.

“I wanted him to stop.””

“And?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“He threatened me.””

I whispered:

“What did he threaten you with?””

Daniel looked at me.

“With exposing my own mistakes.””

I felt anger rising.

“So you chose silence.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

That single word broke something inside me.

“You let me believe my mother just disappeared.””

“I was wrong.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You weren’t just wrong.””

I pointed at him.

“You let me grow up without the truth.””

Daniel started crying.

“I was scared.””

I looked away.

I wanted to hate him.

Maybe part of me did.

But another part remembered every birthday he attended.

Every time he held my hand when I was little.

That was the worst part.

The person who hurt you can still be someone you love.

Thomas quietly gathered the documents.

“Emily, there is one more thing.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He handed me another envelope.

“This was found with your mother’s original files.””

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Not from my mother.

From someone else.

I read the first line.

My breath stopped.

*Daniel Carter, if you are reading this, it means you failed to protect Emily.*

I looked at my father.

The letter continued.

*You need to tell her the truth about what happened that night. She deserves to know who was really responsible.*

My hands shook.

I turned the page.

The final paragraph was only one sentence.

One sentence that changed everything.

*The person who caused the accident was not Mark Collins.*

I looked up.

Everyone was silent.

Then I read the final words.

*It was someone Emily trusts completely.*

My eyes moved slowly across the room.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

Everyone I thought I knew.

Then my phone buzzed one last time.

A photo appeared.

A photo from the night my mother died.

And standing beside her car was someone I recognized.

May you like

Someone who had been pretending to help me all along.

*THE END*
