Chapter 4: The Document My Father Hid

I stared at the photograph on Daniel’s phone until my eyes started burning.

The document was old.

The paper looked yellowed around the edges, like it had been sitting somewhere untouched for years.

But the signature at the bottom was clear.

Emily Carter.

My name.

Again.

My hands curled into fists.

“Where did you get that?”” I asked.

Daniel didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything.

Vanessa reached for his phone.

“Let me see.””

He pulled it away.

“No.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Daniel.””

“No, Vanessa.””

The way he said her name was different.

Not angry.

Afraid.

I looked between them.

“You both know what that is.””

Daniel sat down slowly.

For the first time since I discovered everything, he looked like someone who had run out of excuses.

“Emily…”

I shook my head.

“Don’t.””

His eyes lifted.

“I need you to understand something.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I spent my whole life trying to understand you.””

I pointed at the phone.

“I defended you when people said you changed after you married her. I defended Vanessa when my friends told me something felt wrong.””

Daniel looked down.

“And this is what I get?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Your father was trying to protect you.””

I turned toward her.

“Protect me?””

I laughed.

“You used my identity.””

She opened her mouth.

But no words came out.

That was the first time I saw her lose control.

I grabbed my jacket.

“I’m leaving.””

Daniel immediately stood.

“Where are you going?””

“Somewhere I don’t have to worry about waking up with another debt in my name.””

His face tightened.

“Emily, please.””

I stopped at the doorway.

Because part of me still wanted him to say something that fixed everything.

A reason.

An explanation.

Anything.

Instead, he whispered:

“I made one mistake.””

I turned around.

“One?””

He closed his eyes.

That answer told me everything.

“You did this more than once.””

Silence.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Don’t make your father look like a criminal.””

I looked at her.

“You’re worried about how he looks?””

I held up my phone.

“The bank already knows.””

Her expression changed.

“What do you mean?””

“I reported suspicious activity.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked nervous.

“You shouldn’t have done that.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

I walked out.

“Yes, I should have.””

I spent the next few hours sitting in my car outside a coffee shop.

I didn’t even drink anything.

I just sat there watching people walk by.

Families laughing.

Couples holding hands.

People who trusted each other.

I kept thinking about the envelope.

The documents.

The years of lies.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice responded.

“Is this Emily Carter?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Rachel Bennett. I work in fraud investigations.””

My stomach tightened.

“Fraud investigations?””

“Yes. Your report was escalated because there are multiple irregularities connected to your identity.””

I closed my eyes.

“Can you tell me what happened?””

There was a pause.

“Ms. Carter, before we discuss details, I need to ask you one question.””

“What?””

“Did you authorize anyone in your family to access your financial information?””

My throat tightened.

“No.””

Another pause.

“Then we need to talk about the original application.””

“The original?””

“Yes.””

I sat up.

“What original application?””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“The first identity verification request was submitted three years ago.””

Three years.

The same date from the envelope.

“Who submitted it?””

She hesitated.

Then she answered.

“Your father.””

I felt the air disappear from my lungs.

That evening, I returned home.

Not because I forgave them.

Because I needed answers.

When I opened the door, I heard voices from the kitchen.

Vanessa.

And Daniel.

They didn’t know I was there.

“She reported it,” Vanessa said.

Daniel sounded exhausted.

“I know.””

“She could destroy everything.””

A silence followed.

Then Daniel said something that made me freeze.

“She wasn’t supposed to find out yet.””

Yet.

That one word stopped me.

I stepped into the kitchen.

“Find out what?””

Both of them turned.

Daniel went pale.

Vanessa immediately recovered.

“You shouldn’t listen to private conversations.””

I ignored her.

“What wasn’t I supposed to find out?””

Nobody spoke.

I walked closer.

“Dad?””

His face changed.

And then he whispered:

“The SUV wasn’t the first thing.””

My heart dropped.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

Daniel swallowed.

“It means the documents you found…”

He stopped.

I waited.

“The documents weren’t created for the car.””

I felt a chill move through me.

“Then what were they created for?””

Daniel looked at me.

May you like

And the answer destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.

“They were created because someone was already planning to use your identity.””
