Chapter 11: The Deal They Made Behind My Back
Vanessa sat at the kitchen table.
The same table where I discovered my missing money.
The same table where my father pushed the fake contract toward me.
But now, nobody was pretending anymore.
I placed the flash drive beside me.
“Start talking.””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
He didn’t look back.
That hurt her.
I noticed.
Good.
For years, they had made decisions together.
Now they were finally facing the consequences separately.
Vanessa folded her hands.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
I almost laughed.
“Then why did you?””
She looked down.
“Because I was scared.””
“Of what?””
She took a deep breath.
“When I married your father, I thought everything would be fine.””
I said nothing.
“Then the company started losing money. Mark offered a solution.””
I looked at Mark.
“A solution.””
Mark didn’t react.
Vanessa continued.
“He said your mother left behind assets connected to the company.””
My eyebrows lifted.
“My mother?””
She nodded.
“She had information. Documents. Ownership records.””
I felt my heartbeat increase.
“What ownership records?””
Daniel answered quietly.
“Your mother owned part of the company.””
I turned toward him.
“What?””
He looked ashamed.
“She invested before we married.””
I stared.
“And you never told me?””
“You were young.””
“That’s not an excuse.””
He lowered his head.
Vanessa continued.
“Mark believed your mother had hidden something before she died.””
“Something?””
She nodded.
“A controlling document.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at me.
“It means your mother had legal authority over certain company decisions.””
I stared at him.
“So my identity wasn’t valuable because of my name.””
Silence.
“It was valuable because of what my mother left me.””
Nobody answered.
That was the truth.
The loans.
The fake contracts.
The stolen savings.
It wasn’t random.
It was a plan.
I stood.
“You were trying to take control of something that belonged to me.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“I thought I was helping your father.””
“You were helping yourself.””
She looked away.
“I made mistakes.””
I shook my head.
“No. Mistakes happen once.””
I pointed at the documents.
“This was a choice.””
Mark suddenly stood.
“We need to stop pretending Vanessa was the only one involved.””
Everyone looked at him.
Daniel’s face changed.
“What are you saying?””
Mark reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small folder.
“I have proof.””
Vanessa stood.
“Mark, don’t.””
He ignored her.
He placed it on the table.
“I kept copies because I knew this would happen.””
I opened it.
Inside were emails.
Messages.
Payments.
And one conversation between Mark and Vanessa.
The date was two weeks before the first loan.
My hands shook.
I read the message.
*The girl is close to the target amount. Wait until the account reaches three thousand.*
I stopped breathing.
The girl.
Me.
They had waited.
They watched me save.
They knew.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You waited until I had enough money.””
She didn’t answer.
My eyes burned.
“You knew what that camera meant to me.””
A tear rolled down my cheek.
“And you still took it.””
Vanessa whispered:
“I needed the money.””
I stared.
“For what?””
She looked terrified.
Then Mark answered.
“Because the company wasn’t the only thing collapsing.””
I looked at him.
“What else?””
He pointed at Daniel.
“Your father wasn’t just hiding business problems.””
Daniel’s face went pale.
“Mark.””
But it was too late.
I turned toward my father.
“What else did you do?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Mark slowly said:
“He was already under investigation.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Daniel.
“Investigation for what?””
He closed his eyes.
Then my phone rang.
Rachel from fraud investigations.
I answered.
Her voice was urgent.
“Emily, you need to listen carefully.””
“What happened?””
“We found the source of the identity applications.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
A pause.
Then she said:
“It wasn’t your father.””
I looked around the room.
“Then who?””
May you like
Rachel lowered her voice.
“The applications were submitted from an account registered to you.””
