Chapter 9: The Warning

The message stayed on the screen.
Stop digging into the past, or Emily will lose someone else she loves.
For a moment, I couldn’t understand the words.
Then I felt the fear.
Not for myself.
For everyone around me.
Daniel immediately locked his phone.
“Emily, you need to leave.””
“No.””
His eyes widened.
“No?””
“I spent my entire life not knowing the truth because people decided what I could handle.””
I stepped closer.
“I’m done being protected.””
Daniel stared at me.
Then, slowly, he nodded.
“You sound like your mother.””
The words hurt.
But they also gave me strength.
“Who sent that?””
“I don’t know.””
“Is it my grandfather?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I walked around the studio, looking at everything.
The paintings.
The letters.
The pieces of a life that had been stolen.
“How long have you known about the truth?””
Daniel looked down.
“Only recently.””
“Why?””
“Because I spent years believing Sarah hated me.””
I swallowed.
“And then?””
“Then I found a box she left with a friend.””
“What was inside?””
“Letters.””
“To you?””
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“What did they say?””
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“She forgave me.””
My heart broke.
“My mother forgave everyone.””
Daniel nodded.
“That was who she was.””
I looked at the painting again.
“She deserved better.””
“Yes.””
A silence passed between us.
Then I asked the question I had been afraid to ask.
“Did she love me?””
Daniel looked shocked.
“Emily.””
“I know what she did. I know she protected me. But sometimes…”
My voice cracked.
“Sometimes I wondered if I was the reason her life changed.””
Daniel walked toward me.
“No.””
The certainty in his voice stopped me.
“Never say that again.””
I looked at him.
“Your mother didn’t lose her life because of you.””
He pointed at the painting.
“She found a reason to keep living because of you.””
Tears filled my eyes.
“She told me that before she died.””
Daniel smiled sadly.
“She told me the same thing.””
I looked up.
“You talked to her before she died?””
He nodded.
My heart raced.
“When?””
“The night before.””
I froze.
“You saw her?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I wasn’t allowed to.””
The anger returned.
“Not allowed?””
Daniel looked away.
“Your grandfather made sure I stayed away.””
I clenched my fists.
“What did he threaten you with?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he answered.
“Your mother’s safety.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
“He told me if I exposed him, he would destroy Sarah’s reputation. He said doctors, companies, everyone would believe him.””
“But she was dying.””
“I know.””
His voice broke.
“And that’s why I stayed away.””
I looked at him.
“You sacrificed seeing her because you thought you were protecting her.””
“Yes.””
I sat down.
Everyone had been making sacrifices.
But every sacrifice had left another wound.
A knock suddenly came from the studio door.
Daniel froze.
“We weren’t expecting anyone.””
The knock came again.
Harder.
I looked at him.
“Who is it?””
He didn’t answer.
The door opened slowly.
A woman stepped inside.
She looked familiar.
Older.
Elegant.
And angry.
Daniel stood immediately.
“What are you doing here?””
The woman looked at me.
Then at the ballet shoes on my feet.
Her expression changed.
“No.””
I stepped back.
“Who are you?””
She ignored me.
She looked at Daniel.
“You promised me you would never tell her.””
My heart stopped.
Daniel’s face went pale.
“I never promised you that.””
The woman took a step forward.
“Yes, you did.””
“After everything you did?””
Her eyes hardened.
“I did what I had to do.””
I stared at her.
“Who are you?””
Slowly, she turned toward me.
And when she spoke, I felt the entire room disappear.
“My name is Claire Mitchell.””
I froze.
Mitchell.
My last name.
Daniel whispered:
“Emily… she’s your aunt.””
May you like
The woman looked directly at me.
“And I’m the person your mother was trying to protect you from.””
