Chapter 5: The Box Under the Stage

I couldn’t move.
The words carved into the wooden box blurred in front of my eyes.
The truth about your real father.
I looked at Rachel.
Then Victoria.
Then Brianna.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, I whispered, “What does that mean?””
Rachel’s face turned pale.
“I didn’t know she put that there.””
“You knew something about my father?””
The question came out sharper than I intended.
Rachel flinched.
“I knew your mother had secrets.””
“That’s not an answer.””
My voice echoed through the empty studio.
For years, I had accepted the little information I had.
My father’s name was never spoken.
My mother always changed the subject.
When I was younger, I assumed he had left.
That he didn’t want me.
But now I wondered if the truth had been hidden from me.
Rachel stepped closer.
“Emily, your mother loved your father.””
“Then why didn’t I know him?””
“Because something happened before you were born.””
“What happened?””
Rachel looked at the box.
“I think your mother wanted you to discover it yourself.””
I hated that answer.
It felt like everyone knew pieces of my life except me.
I grabbed the box and carried it to the center table.
The lock was old.
Victoria handed me a small tool.
“Your mother was always careful with her secrets.””
I forced a small laugh.
“Apparently.””
The lock opened.
Inside were dozens of items.
Letters.
Photographs.
A tiny baby bracelet.
And a worn-out journal.
I picked up the journal first.
The cover had my mother’s initials.
S.M.
My hands shook.
“Read it,” Rachel whispered.
I opened the first page.
The handwriting was familiar.
The same handwriting from the letter.
March 12.
Today I met someone who makes me believe dreams can come true.
I continued reading.
His name was Daniel.
He didn’t care that dancing was my entire world. He loved me because of it, not despite it.
My breath caught.
Daniel.
My father’s name.
I turned the page.
The entries continued.
My mother wrote about him.
About how he watched her practice.
How he brought her flowers after performances.
How he made her laugh.
Then I reached the page where everything changed.
I knew the company would never accept my pregnancy.
But Daniel promised me we would figure it out.
I smiled sadly.
My mother had loved him.
She wasn’t abandoned.
Something else happened.
I turned the page.
The next entry was darker.
Daniel disappeared today.
No explanation.
No goodbye.
Only a message saying he had to leave.
My heart sank.
“What happened to him?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
I kept reading.
The following pages were filled with pain.
My mother searched.
She called.
She waited.
But Daniel never returned.
Then one sentence made me stop.
I finally learned why Daniel left.
I looked at Rachel.
“What does this mean?””
She looked confused.
“I don’t know.””
I turned the page.
But the next page was missing.
Someone had torn it out.
I flipped through the journal again.
Only that page.
Only that secret.
Someone had intentionally removed it.
Brianna noticed.
“Someone didn’t want you to know.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
The realization hit me.
“They didn’t want my mother to tell me.””
Victoria picked up the journal.
“Emily, there’s something else.””
She pointed at a photograph hidden beneath the journal.
It showed my mother.
Daniel.
And another person standing behind them.
A person I recognized immediately.
My stomach dropped.
“Is that…”
Rachel looked at the photo.
Her face lost all color.
“That’s impossible.””
“Who is it?”” Brianna asked.
Nobody answered.
Because I already knew.
The man standing beside my mother and father was someone I had seen hundreds of times.
Someone who had comforted me after my mother died.
Someone who had always said he was only a family friend.
My hands began shaking.
“That’s my grandfather.””
The room went silent.
Victoria whispered:
“Emily…”
I looked at the photograph.
“What?””
She pointed at the date written on the back.
The date was two weeks after my father disappeared.
May you like
And underneath it, my mother had written a single sentence:
*The person I trusted most destroyed the family I was trying to build.*
