Chapter 10: The Sister My Mother Hid

The room felt like it had lost all oxygen.
I stared at the woman standing in front of me.
Claire Mitchell.
My aunt.
A person I never knew existed.
A person my mother had supposedly been protecting me from.
I looked at Daniel.
“Is this true?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That hesitation hurt more than the truth.
“Daniel.””
He swallowed.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“How many secrets are there?””
Nobody spoke.
Claire looked at me with an expression I couldn’t understand.
Not hatred.
Not guilt.
Something worse.
Pain.
“You have your mother’s eyes,” she whispered.
I stepped back.
“Don’t say that.””
Her face changed.
“I know you don’t want to hear that from me.””
“No. I don’t.””
Because my mother’s eyes were sacred.
They belonged to the woman who held me when I cried.
The woman who stayed awake through my nightmares.
The woman who taught me that kindness mattered.
Not someone who was connected to another secret.
Claire looked down.
“I never wanted you to know me this way.””
“Then how did you want me to know you?””
She had no answer.
Daniel moved between us.
“Claire, you need to leave.””
She looked at him.
“You still protect her.””
“Yes.””
“Even after everything?””
“Especially after everything.””
I looked between them.
“What happened?””
Claire closed the door behind her.
“I think you deserve the truth.””
I almost laughed.
Everyone kept saying that.
The truth.
As if it was a gift.
But every truth I discovered broke something else.
Claire walked toward the table.
“Your mother and I were sisters.””
“I know.””
“But we weren’t always enemies.””
She touched one of the old photographs.
“When we were young, Sarah was the talented one. Everyone saw her.””
I frowned.
“Were you jealous?””
Claire looked at me.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I loved my sister. But I hated always being compared to her.””
She picked up the photograph of my mother dancing.
“She was graceful. Brilliant. Everyone believed she was destined for greatness.””
“And you weren’t?””
Claire’s eyes lowered.
“I was always the shadow.””
The words sounded familiar.
Too familiar.
“But that doesn’t explain everything.””
“No.””
She took a deep breath.
“Years later, when Sarah became pregnant with you, our father saw an opportunity.””
“My grandfather.””
Claire nodded.
“He believed the family needed a perfect image. No scandals. No mistakes.””
“And you helped him.””
The accusation came out before I could stop it.
Claire didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked away.
I felt sick.
“Why?””
“Because I was angry.””
Her voice cracked.
“I thought Sarah got everything. Talent. Love. A future.””
“So you helped destroy her?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The confession was so simple that it hurt.
“What did you do?””
She looked at me.
“I told Daniel a lie.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“You told me Sarah wanted me gone.””
Claire nodded.
“I told him she blamed him.””
My hands became cold.
“You were the one who separated them?””
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Daniel.
All those years.
All those letters.
All that pain.
Because of her.
“Why would my mother forgive you?””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because Sarah found out.””
“When?””
“Years later.””
I froze.
“She knew?””
Claire nodded.
“She came to my house.””
“What happened?””
Claire looked away.
“She asked me one question.””
“What question?””
Her voice became barely audible.
‘Why did you make me lose the people I loved?’
My throat tightened.
“What did you say?””
“I told her I was sorry.””
“And?””
“She hugged me.””
I couldn’t believe it.
“She hugged you?””
“Yes.””
Claire wiped her eyes.
“That was Sarah.””
I looked down.
My mother had been betrayed by everyone.
And somehow, she still chose forgiveness.
Then Claire reached into her bag.
“I brought something.””
She placed an old envelope on the table.
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
My mother’s.
“What is that?””
“Something Sarah gave me before she died.””
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
Claire looked ashamed.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked directly at me.
“That you would see me the way I saw myself.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
Emily,
If you are reading this, then Claire finally told you the truth.
I stopped.
My mother knew.
She knew I would meet Claire.
The letter continued.
Your aunt made mistakes. Terrible ones.
But she was hurting too.
I closed my eyes.
Even now, my mother was asking me to understand.
Not excuse.
Understand.
Then I read the final lines.
Emily, there is one thing I need you to know.
The person who caused the most damage was never Claire.
My heart stopped.
I turned the page.
The last sentence was written darker than the rest.
*The person who started everything is still hiding the biggest secret.*
I looked up.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel’s phone rang again.
He checked the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
I stood.
“What is it?””
May you like
He slowly looked at me.
“It’s your grandfather.””
