Chapter 12: The Shadow Behind My Mother’s Death

I couldn’t speak.
The room felt frozen.
My grandfather’s words repeated in my mind.
Someone made sure Sarah never recovered.
I stood slowly.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at the floor.
“It means I was not the only person who hurt her.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
He shook his head.
“I thought I did.””
The frustration exploded.
“You have spent my entire life hiding things from me, and now you’re saying you don’t know?””
He looked up.
“You have every right to hate me.””
I stopped.
Because he was right.
But hate wasn’t the only thing I felt.
I felt tired.
Tired of secrets.
Tired of people deciding what I deserved to know.
“What happened to my mother?””
My grandfather looked toward the window.
“After Sarah got sick, she started investigating.””
“Investigating what?””
“The missing letters. Daniel. The company.””
He swallowed.
“She discovered someone had been watching her.””
My skin prickled.
“Watching her?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
“I never found out.””
I thought about the message.
Stop digging into the past, or Emily will lose someone else she loves.
Someone was still watching.
Someone still cared about the truth staying hidden.
I grabbed the box.
“I need everything.””
My grandfather nodded.
“I know.””
I turned to leave.
“Emily.””
I stopped.
He looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
Two simple words.
The words I had wanted to hear for years.
But they didn’t erase anything.
“I believe you’re sorry.””
His face softened.
“But I still have to live with what you did.””
I walked out.
Outside, Daniel was waiting.
He looked at my expression.
“What happened?””
I handed him the box.
“He confessed.””
Daniel opened it.
Then he saw the hospital bracelet.
His hands began shaking.
“She kept this.””
“She kept everything.””
He closed his eyes.
For a moment, he wasn’t a stranger.
He was just a father grieving the years he lost.
“I should have been there.””
I looked at him.
“You were.””
He looked at me.
“What?””
I pointed to the bracelet.
“You were.””
Tears filled his eyes.
Later that night, we went through the box together.
Every document revealed another piece.
My mother’s career.
My father’s letters.
My grandfather’s lies.
Then we found something unexpected.
A small recording device.
Daniel looked confused.
“What is that?””
I pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then my mother’s voice appeared.
My heart stopped.
“Emily…”
I covered my mouth.
Her voice.
After all these years.
My mother.
The recording continued.
“If you are hearing this, it means the truth has finally started coming out.””
I started crying.
Daniel looked away, unable to hide his emotion.
My mother continued.
“I know people will blame each other. I know they will want revenge.””
A pause.
“But revenge will not bring me back.””
The recording crackled.
Then she said:
“There is only one person I was afraid of.””
I leaned closer.
The room became completely silent.
My mother’s voice became softer.
“Not my father.””
I froze.
“Not Claire.””
Daniel looked at me.
Then the recording continued.
“The person who destroyed my life was someone I trusted more than anyone.””
My heart raced.
“Someone who knew my dreams.””
A pause.
“Someone who knew exactly where to hurt me.””
The recording ended.
I stared at the device.
“No.””
Daniel picked it up.
“It stopped.””
“Play it again.””
He did.
But this time, before the recording ended, we heard something we missed.
A sound in the background.
A voice.
Someone speaking to my mother.
A man.
And after enhancing the volume, the words became clear.
Daniel’s face went pale.
Because he recognized the voice.
“It can’t be.””
I looked at him.
“Who is it?””
He stared at the recorder.
May you like
Then whispered:
“Your mother’s doctor.””
