Chapter 14: The Truth My Mother Protected

I stared at the photograph.

Claire.

Again.

My mind refused to accept it.

After everything.

After her confession.

After the years of guilt in her eyes.

Was she still hiding something?

Daniel looked at the picture.

“Emily.””

“I know.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

Dr. Hale looked confused.

“You know her?””

“She’s my aunt.””

The doctor’s face changed.

“Your aunt?””

“Yes.””

He sat down slowly.

“Then you need to hear everything.””

I looked at him.

“Tell me.””

Dr. Hale opened the file.

“Sarah discovered something about Claire.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“Claire wasn’t working alone.””

The room became silent.

“Who was with her?””

Dr. Hale hesitated.

“Your grandfather.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

The same names.

The same people.

The same pain.

“But you said my grandfather paid you.””

“Yes.””

“To hide what?””

Dr. Hale looked at the file.

“The fact that Sarah knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That Claire regretted what she did.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Dr. Hale nodded.

“Because Sarah discovered the truth years later.””

He pulled out a document.

“Your aunt tried to repair the damage.””

I looked at Daniel.

“By helping us?””

Daniel nodded.

“Maybe.””

Dr. Hale continued.

“Claire found out your grandfather had gone further than anyone knew.””

My fingers tightened.

“What did he do?””

“He didn’t just separate Sarah and Daniel.””

A pause.

“He destroyed evidence.””

My stomach dropped.

“What evidence?””

“The evidence proving Daniel had never abandoned Sarah.””

The letters.

The documents.

The proof.

My mother’s entire life had been rewritten.

But there was something else.

“Why did my mother never expose him?””

Dr. Hale looked at me.

“Because she knew what it would do.””

“What?””

“Destroy the family completely.””

I laughed bitterly.

“She protected people who hurt her.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Dr. Hale smiled sadly.

“Because Sarah believed broken people could still become better.””

I looked down.

That was my mother.

Even when people failed her.

She searched for the good in them.

Then Daniel noticed something in the file.

“Wait.””

He pulled out a paper.

“What is this?””

Dr. Hale looked surprised.

“I forgot about that.””

Daniel handed it to me.

It was a medical note.

Written by my mother.

Not Dr. Hale.

Not anyone else.

Her handwriting.

Emily,

If you ever find this, please understand.

I know who hurt me.

I know why.

But I also know the truth about forgiveness.

I stopped reading.

Because underneath was a sentence that made my heart race.

The person who hurt me most is not the person you think.

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Dr. Hale shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

Then the door opened.

Everyone turned.

Claire stood there.

Her face was filled with tears.

“I know.””

My heart stopped.

“Claire?””

She walked inside slowly.

“I know what your mother meant.””

Nobody spoke.

Claire looked at me.

“She wasn’t talking about your grandfather.””

My voice shook.

“Then who?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Me.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

She looked broken.

“I thought my biggest mistake was lying to Daniel.””

She took a breath.

“But it wasn’t.””

I stepped closer.

“Then what was it?””

Claire looked at the photograph.

“The night Sarah got sick, I was the one who found the problem.””

“What problem?””

“The medication.””

My blood ran cold.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Claire’s tears fell.

“Because I was scared.””

“Of who?””

She looked at me.

“Your grandfather.””

I froze.

“But you said he wasn’t the one.””

“He wasn’t the one who changed the medication.””

My heart pounded.

“Then who was?””

Claire looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

And whispered:

“The person who did it was someone Sarah trusted completely.””

Nobody moved.

“Who?””

Claire’s voice broke.

“Her best friend.””

I stared at her.

“Rachel?””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

The answer came softly.

“It was someone else.””

I waited.

Claire looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“Emily… your mother’s best friend was not Rachel.””

My heart stopped.

“Then who?””

May you like

Claire whispered:

“It was Victoria.””
