Chapter 3: The Truth Hidden in the Past

The next morning, I woke up with my mother’s letter still in my hand.

I barely slept.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the same sentence.

If you ever meet Rachel Carter’s daughter, you must know the truth.

Brianna.

The girl who laughed at my shoes.

The girl who embarrassed me in front of everyone.

The girl whose mother shared a secret history with mine.

I wanted to hate her.

It would have been easier.

But now I wondered if she was just another person trapped inside a story she didn’t understand.

At school, everyone was talking about my performance.

Students who had never spoken to me before stopped me in the hallway.

“You were amazing.””

“Your dance was beautiful.””

“I cried when you finished.””

I smiled politely.

But my mind was somewhere else.

During lunch, Brianna sat across from me.

That alone shocked everyone.

“What are you doing?”” Chloe asked.

Brianna looked at her.

“Trying to fix something.””

Chloe laughed.

“Since when do you care?””

Brianna didn’t respond.

She looked at me.

“I owe you an apology.””

I waited.

She looked down at my shoes.

“I was horrible yesterday.””

“Yes,” I said.

She flinched.

I wasn’t trying to be cruel.

I was just tired of pretending things didn’t hurt.

“I shouldn’t have touched your shoes,” she said.

“I shouldn’t have laughed.””

“Why did you?””

Brianna was quiet.

Finally, she answered.

“Because my mom always told me that old things hold people back.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

She looked away.

“She said Sarah Mitchell ruined everything.””

The words felt like a slap.

“Your mother said that?””

Brianna nodded.

“But I never knew why.””

I thought about the letter.

The missing years.

The friendship that ended.

“What happened between them?””

“I don’t know.””

She hesitated.

“But I want to.””

After school, Brianna and I met Victoria at the dance studio.

The same studio where my mother had once practiced.

The wooden floor creaked beneath our feet.

Victoria placed two old boxes on the table.

“These belonged to Sarah and Rachel.””

My heart raced.

“Why do you have them?””

“Because they asked me to keep them.””

I opened the first box.

Inside were photographs.

Programs from old performances.

Letters.

Memories.

Then I found one picture that made me stop.

My mother and Rachel were standing together.

Both were crying.

Both were holding a baby.

Me.

Brianna leaned closer.

“That’s my mom.””

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at the picture.

“Why were they holding me together?””

Nobody answered.

Then Victoria quietly said:

“Because before everything fell apart, Rachel was the person your mother trusted most.””

I looked up.

“What fell apart?””

Victoria opened the second box.

Inside was a newspaper clipping.

The headline made my stomach drop.

“Local Ballet Star Forced to Leave Company After Scandal.””

I read the date.

It was three years before I was born.

Below the headline was my mother’s picture.

“No,” I whispered.

Victoria looked sad.

“Your mother lost her career because of a lie.””

“What lie?””

Before Victoria could answer, the studio door suddenly opened.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Angry.

And familiar.

Brianna gasped.

“Mom?””

Rachel Carter stepped inside.

Her eyes went straight to the boxes.

Then to me.

Then to the ballet shoes on my feet.

Her face turned pale.

“Where did you get those?””

I stood slowly.

“They belonged to my mother.””

Rachel’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Pain.

She whispered one word.

“Sarah.””

The room froze.

Then Rachel walked toward me.

“I thought those shoes were gone forever.””

I stepped back.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because your mother gave them to me the night she found out the truth.””

My heart pounded.

“What truth?””

Rachel looked at Brianna.

Then at me.

And her next words shattered everything I believed about my mother’s final years.

“Emily… your mother didn’t lose her dream because she chose you.””

May you like

She took a shaky breath.

“She lost it because someone betrayed both of us.””
