Chapter 7: The Recording Rachel Left Behind
For a few seconds, nobody spoke.
Sophia’s words stayed in the basement like smoke.
“Mommy.””
One word.
One name.
And suddenly every excuse Vanessa had ever given sounded different.
Daniel stared at his daughter.
“What did you say?””
Sophia’s face crumpled.
“I’m sorry, Daddy.””
She hugged her rabbit tightly.
“I wasn’t supposed to tell.””
I moved toward her slowly.
“Sweetheart, nobody is mad at you.””
She looked at Daniel.
“But Daddy will be.””
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“No.””
His voice broke.
“No, Sophia. Never.””
She looked at him like she wanted to believe him but wasn’t sure she could.
That hurt me more than anything.
A child should never look at her own father like he was someone she needed permission to trust.
I turned back toward the closet.
“What does she mean, Daniel?””
He looked lost.
“I don’t know.””
But his eyes said something else.
He knew there was more.
I stepped closer.
“You knew Vanessa was involved.””
“I knew she was hiding something.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Daniel looked away.
“I thought she was protecting Rachel.””
“Why?””
“Because after Rachel disappeared, Vanessa changed.””
“How?””
He swallowed.
“She became obsessed with controlling everything.””
The sound of footsteps above us stopped him.
Everyone looked up.
Vanessa was standing at the top of the stairs.
She wasn’t angry.
That was worse.
She looked disappointed.
Like we had broken a rule.
“Sophia,” she said calmly.
“Come here.””
The little girl immediately stepped behind me.
Vanessa noticed.
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“Michael.””
Her voice was cold.
“You’ve caused enough damage.””
I stared at her.
“You hurt her.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Vanessa…”
She looked at him.
“Don’t.””
One word.
And my brother stopped.
That told me everything.
Vanessa walked down the stairs slowly.
“I know what you found.””
I held up the journal.
“Then you know this isn’t over.””
She smiled.
“You have no idea what you found.””
“Then explain.””
For the first time, her confidence cracked.
“You think this is simple?””
“Yes.””
“No, Michael.””
She pointed toward the journal.
“You’re looking at a story written by a woman who was unstable.””
“Rachel?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She blamed everyone for her own mistakes.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Is that true?””
He didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t believe it.
Vanessa saw that.
And her face hardened.
“You were supposed to burn those.””
Daniel went pale.
“What?””
“The journals.””
The basement became silent.
I slowly turned toward him.
“You knew about these?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I found them after she left.””
“And you hid them?””
“I didn’t know what to believe.””
“You hid evidence.””
His voice cracked.
“I was trying to protect Sophia.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
Daniel looked like I had slapped him.
Because he knew I was right.
Then Sophia whispered.
“There’s more.””
Everyone turned.
She pointed toward the closet.
“Rachel left something for Daddy.””
Vanessa’s expression changed instantly.
“What did you say?””
Sophia took a step back.
“She told me if anything happened, Daddy should look behind the wall.””
Vanessa moved forward.
“No.””
It was the first time I had heard fear in her voice.
Not anger.
Fear.
I looked at the closet.
Behind the wall.
I grabbed the old shelf and pushed it aside.
There was a small crack in the wood.
A hidden compartment.
Inside was a small digital recorder.
Vanessa lunged forward.
“Give me that.””
Daniel stepped in front of her.
“No.””
The room froze.
My brother had finally stopped being afraid.
I picked up the recorder.
The battery was still inside.
I pressed play.
Static filled the basement.
Then a woman’s voice.
Rachel.
“If you’re hearing this, it means Vanessa found out.””
Vanessa went completely still.
Rachel continued.
“I tried to tell Daniel the truth, but he didn’t want to believe me.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I’m sorry, Sophia.””
The little girl started crying.
Then Rachel’s voice continued.
“The person you should be afraid of is not me.””
A pause.
A deep breath.
Then:
“Vanessa has been lying about what happened in this house.””
The recorder clicked.
Static returned.
Then Rachel whispered one final sentence.
“Daniel, ask her why there is a second chair in the basement.””
The recording stopped.
Everyone looked at Vanessa.
May you like
And she knew.
The secret she had buried was about to come back.
