Chapter 10: The Night Rachel Disappeared

Nobody spoke after Sophia’s words.

I saw Mommy lock the door.

A five-year-old child had just reopened a wound everyone in that house had spent years trying to bury.

Daniel looked at his daughter.

His face was full of confusion, pain, and disbelief.

“Sophia,” he whispered.

She immediately looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel dropped to his knees.

“No. No, sweetheart.””

He reached for her hand.

“You don’t ever have to apologize for telling the truth.””

Sophia looked at Vanessa.

“She told me not to tell.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“Sophia.””

The little girl flinched.

That reaction was enough.

Daniel stood up.

“Don’t.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Don’t what?””

“Don’t say her name like that.””

For years, my brother had allowed fear to control every decision.

But now something had changed.

He finally saw what everyone else had seen.

His daughter was afraid of her own mother.

Rachel stepped inside and closed the door behind her.

“I need to tell you what happened that night.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I thought you left.””

“I know.””

“Everyone thought you left.””

Rachel nodded.

“Because that’s what Vanessa wanted.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You’re still blaming me?””

Rachel turned toward her.

“Because you’re still lying.””

The room felt smaller.

Everyone gathered in the living room.

The Christmas decorations that had looked so beautiful the day before suddenly felt fake.

Rachel sat down across from us.

“I moved in because Vanessa told me she needed help.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“You said Sophia was difficult.””

Rachel looked at him.

“She wasn’t difficult.””

She looked toward Sophia.

“She was scared.””

Sophia held her rabbit tighter.

Rachel continued.

“At first, I thought she was just shy. Then I started noticing things.””

“What things?”” I asked.

Rachel looked at the little girl.

“She would hide food in her room.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

“Because she thought someone would take it away.””

Daniel covered his mouth.

Rachel’s voice shook.

“She would apologize every time she dropped something. Every time she laughed too loudly. Every time she asked for anything.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She stood silently.

Not denying.

Not defending.

Rachel continued.

“One night, I found her sitting on the basement stairs crying.””

Daniel looked toward the basement.

“She told me she wasn’t allowed to tell anyone.””

“About what?””

Rachel stared at Vanessa.

“About what Vanessa was doing.””

The silence was unbearable.

Daniel looked at his wife.

“Is this true?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“She’s manipulating you.””

Rachel ignored her.

“I recorded conversations because I knew nobody would believe me.””

She pulled another device from her bag.

A small flash drive.

“I was going to take Sophia and leave.””

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“You were going to take my daughter?””

“I was going to protect her.””

The words hit him.

Then Rachel looked at the floor.

“But Vanessa found out.””

“What happened?”” I asked.

Rachel took a deep breath.

“She locked me in the basement.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“She told me nobody would believe a woman with my history.””

Vanessa finally spoke.

“You’re insane.””

Rachel looked at her.

“You left me there overnight.””

Daniel stepped back.

“No.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“And Sophia saw?””

Rachel looked at the little girl.

“She saw her mother lock the door.””

Sophia started crying.

“I didn’t know Aunt Rachel was inside.””

Rachel immediately softened.

“Sweetheart, none of this was your fault.””

Daniel looked devastated.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Rachel laughed sadly.

“I tried.””

“Then why didn’t I know?””

Rachel looked at him.

“Because Vanessa deleted my messages.””

Daniel’s face changed.

He grabbed his phone.

“What?””

“She had access to your accounts.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“Did you?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Daniel stepped away from her.

“I trusted you.””

Vanessa’s expression became cold.

“No.””

She looked around the room.

“You believed what was easiest.””

Nobody responded.

Then the sound of sirens appeared outside.

Vanessa looked toward the window.

Her face changed.

“Who did you call?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I hadn’t called anyone.

Daniel hadn’t either.

Rachel looked confused.

Then Sophia whispered:

“Mommy called someone.””

Everyone turned.

Vanessa slowly smiled.

And she said:

“Finally.””

The front door opened.

And a man in a suit walked inside.
