Chapter 6: The Secret Behind The Door
Nobody moved.
The basement light flickered above us.
Vanessa stood beside the open door, watching my reaction.
Like she wanted to see if I was afraid.
I wasn’t.
Not anymore.
I walked down the stairs.
Each step creaked beneath my feet.
The basement was larger than I expected.
Old furniture sat covered with sheets.
Christmas decorations filled cardboard boxes.
Family photographs lined one wall.
But something was wrong.
The pictures stopped three years ago.
The year Rachel moved in.
I looked closer.
Sophia was younger.
Daniel was smiling.
Vanessa was smiling.
Rachel stood beside them.
Everyone looked happy.
But Sophia’s face was different.
Even in the pictures.
She looked scared.
“Michael.””
Daniel’s voice came from behind me.
I turned.
He was standing at the bottom of the stairs.
Vanessa had disappeared.
“Where is she?””
Daniel looked toward the ceiling.
“She does that.””
“Does what?””
“Lets people see enough to scare them.””
I looked around.
“She wants us to find something.””
Daniel nodded.
“That’s what I’m afraid of.””
We moved deeper into the basement.
Then I saw the closet.
The one Sophia warned me about.
The door was slightly open.
I reached for it.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
“Wait.””
“Why?””
He looked at me.
“Because that’s where I found Rachel’s things.””
“What things?””
He let go.
“Her journal.””
Inside the closet was a small wooden box.
No lock.
No dust.
Someone had opened it recently.
I pulled it out.
Inside were notebooks.
Photographs.
And dozens of pages.
The first notebook belonged to Rachel.
I opened it.
The handwriting started normal.
Then changed.
The entries became darker.
“She knows.””
“She’s telling Daniel.””
“She won’t stop crying.””
“She thinks nobody believes her.””
My hands tightened.
Then I found the final page.
The last sentence was written differently.
Like someone else had written it.
“I was not the only person who hurt Sophia.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked confused.
“What?””
I handed him the page.
His face changed.
“No.””
“What does that mean?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
A noise came from upstairs.
A door closing.
Then footsteps.
Vanessa.
Daniel looked toward the stairs.
“She knows.””
I put the journal inside my coat.
“We need to call someone.””
Daniel nodded.
But before we could move, Sophia’s voice came from the stairs.
“Uncle Michael.””
I looked up.
She was standing there.
Crying.
“What happened?””
She pointed behind her.
“The closet.””
I froze.
“What about it?””
Her lips trembled.
“I lied.””
My heart sank.
“About what?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
“Aunt Rachel wasn’t hiding in there.””
The basement suddenly felt silent.
“Then who was?””
May you like
Sophia whispered:
“Mommy.””
