Chapter 4: The Truth My Brother Hid

The sound of footsteps coming down the hallway made Daniel freeze.

Not nervous.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

I had seen my brother angry before. I had seen him frustrated, embarrassed, and exhausted.

But I had never seen fear on his face.

“Daniel,” I whispered.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

His eyes stayed fixed on the kitchen doorway.

Then Vanessa appeared.

Her expression was calm.

Too calm.

“Everything okay in here?””

Daniel immediately stepped away from me.

“Yeah.””

Vanessa looked between us.

“Really?””

Nobody spoke.

The Christmas music playing softly from the living room suddenly felt unbearable.

She walked closer.

“What were you two talking about?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

I realized something in that moment.

My brother wasn’t protecting himself.

He was protecting someone else.

And I wasn’t sure if that made me more angry or more afraid.

“I was asking about the basement,” I said.

Vanessa smiled.

“The basement?””

“Yes.””

She laughed quietly.

“There’s nothing interesting down there.””

“Then why is it locked?””

Her smile disappeared for half a second.

Then returned.

“Storage.””

“Why can’t Sophia go near it?””

Daniel looked at me sharply.

I hadn’t told him I knew that.

Vanessa noticed.

Her eyes narrowed.

“Excuse me?””

I didn’t answer.

Instead, I walked toward the living room.

Sophia was sitting on the couch with her rabbit.

She looked tiny.

Too small for the fear she carried.

I sat beside her.

“Hey.””

She looked at me.

“Are you leaving?””

The question hit harder than I expected.

“Not yet.””

Her fingers tightened around the rabbit.

“Uncle Michael…”

“Yes?””

She leaned closer.

“Daddy tried to help me.””

I looked toward Daniel.

He was standing in the kitchen doorway.

Watching us.

“Help you from what?””

Sophia looked around.

Then whispered.

“From Aunt Rachel.””

I frowned.

“Who is Aunt Rachel?””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“Sophia.””

Her voice was sharp.

The little girl immediately stopped talking.

I turned around.

“Who is Rachel?””

Vanessa grabbed a blanket from the chair.

“My sister.””

“Where is she?””

“Not around anymore.””

That answer felt strange.

Not gone.

Not moved away.

Not busy.

Not around anymore.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Michael, drop it.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

The word came out before I could stop it.

“No, I won’t.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“You came here for Christmas, not to interrogate my family.””

“Your family?””

I looked at Sophia.

“She’s your daughter.””

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Daniel walked toward me.

“Michael.””

His voice was quiet.

A warning.

But I didn’t back down.

“What happened to Rachel?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

And Vanessa looked back at him.

That exchange told me everything.

They both knew.

And they had both been hiding it.

That night, after Vanessa put Sophia to bed, Daniel knocked on my guest room door.

I opened it.

He stepped inside and closed it behind him.

“You need to understand something,” he whispered.

“I’m listening.””

Daniel sat on the edge of the bed.

His hands were shaking.

“Three years ago, Rachel lived with us.””

“Vanessa’s sister?””

He nodded.

“She had problems.””

“What kind of problems?””

Daniel looked down.

“She was angry all the time.””

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

“And Sophia?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Rachel babysat her.””

The room went silent.

“How long?””

“Six months.””

I stared at him.

“Daniel…”

“I didn’t know.””

His voice cracked.

“I swear, Michael. I didn’t know.””

“Know what?””

He looked toward the door.

Then whispered.

“That Rachel was hurting her.””

I felt sick.

“Then why is Vanessa protecting her?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was the moment I realized something.

Maybe Rachel wasn’t the only person hiding the truth.

“Daniel,” I said slowly.

“What happened to Rachel?””

He looked at me.

His eyes filled with guilt.

“She disappeared the night Sophia told me what happened.””

“And?””

He swallowed.

“And Vanessa told everyone Rachel left because she was ashamed.””

I stared at him.

“But you don’t believe that.””

Daniel looked away.

“No.””

“Why?””

His answer came quietly.

“Because the night Rachel disappeared…”

He stopped.

Then looked at me.

“She left something behind.””

I waited.

“What?””

May you like

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“The same thing Sophia found under her chair.””
