Chapter 13: The Truth Daniel Never Told
The room went completely silent.
Nobody moved.
The video continued playing.
Little Sophia sat on the floor of the basement, holding her stuffed rabbit.
Her eyes were red from crying.
The camera shook slightly.
Then the voice behind it spoke again.
“Tell them what your daddy did.””
My eyes moved toward Daniel.
His face had gone pale.
“No…”
The word escaped his mouth like a whisper.
Sophia covered her ears.
“Stop.””
The officer immediately paused the video.
Everyone looked at Daniel.
But he wasn’t looking at us.
He was looking at his daughter.
“I need to explain.””
Rachel’s expression changed.
“Daniel.””
He closed his eyes.
“I know how this looks.””
I stepped forward.
“Then explain.””
Daniel sat down slowly.
For the first time, he looked older than he was.
Like years of guilt had finally caught up with him.
“I didn’t hurt Sophia.””
Nobody answered.
“But I did something worse.””
Sophia looked confused.
“What?””
Daniel looked at her.
“I didn’t protect you.””
The words broke something inside him.
“When Rachel came to me, she told me something was wrong.””
He looked at Rachel.
“She told me Vanessa was scaring you.””
Rachel nodded.
“I begged you to listen.””
Daniel swallowed.
“I was afraid.””
“Of Vanessa?”” I asked.
He shook his head.
“Of losing everything.””
The honesty made the room even heavier.
“My business was failing. My marriage was already falling apart. I thought if I admitted there was a problem, everything would collapse.””
Sophia stared at him.
“So you knew?””
Daniel looked down.
“I knew something was wrong.””
A tear fell from his eye.
“But I convinced myself it wasn’t that bad.””
Rachel looked away.
“That was the part that hurt the most.””
The officer looked at the screen.
“What about this video?””
Daniel stared at it.
“I know what it is.””
He took a breath.
“Vanessa recorded that after I confronted her.””
Everyone turned.
“You confronted her?””
Daniel nodded.
“The night Rachel disappeared.””
The room became silent again.
“I found out Vanessa had been lying about Rachel.””
He looked at Sophia.
“And I asked her why she was treating you differently.””
“What happened?””
Daniel rubbed his hands together.
“She told me Sophia was making things up.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She remained silent.
“Then she showed me the video.””
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“She said it proved I was the problem.””
Rachel frowned.
“What?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I never saw the entire thing.””
The officer looked at the computer.
“Because it was edited.””
Daniel nodded.
“Vanessa cut out everything before that moment.””
The officer reopened the file.
This time, he checked the metadata.
“Interesting.””
Everyone looked at him.
“The video was modified.””
Vanessa finally spoke.
“That proves nothing.””
The officer looked at her.
“It proves someone altered evidence.””
Richard suddenly moved toward the door.
Nobody missed it.
The officer stopped him.
“Mr. Hale, stay where you are.””
Richard froze.
Daniel looked at him.
“You were part of this.””
Richard said nothing.
That silence answered enough.
The officer played the full recovered version.
The beginning showed what had been removed.
Daniel entering the basement.
Daniel crying.
Daniel telling Sophia:
“I’m sorry.””
Then another voice.
His own.
“I should have listened.””
Sophia covered her mouth.
Because she remembered.
The edited version had made it look like Daniel was threatening her.
But the truth was different.
Vanessa had taken a moment of guilt and turned it into evidence against him.
The officer stopped the video.
“We have enough to investigate further.””
Vanessa finally looked defeated.
But then she smiled.
Small.
Cold.
“You still don’t understand.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
She looked toward Sophia.
“Ask her what she saw that night.””
Everyone turned.
Sophia froze.
Her fingers tightened around mine.
“Sweetheart?””
She looked terrified.
“I don’t want to.””
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“You don’t have to.””
But Sophia shook her head.
“No.””
A long pause.
Then she whispered:
“I remember.””
Everyone held their breath.
May you like
Sophia looked at the basement door.
“I remember who was really there.””
