Chapter 5: The Woman In The Basement

I barely slept.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Sophia sitting at that dinner table.

Trying not to cry.

Trying not to be noticed.

And I kept hearing Daniel’s words.

The same thing Sophia found under her chair.

By sunrise, I had made up my mind.

I was going downstairs.

The basement door was still locked.

But now I knew there was a reason.

Daniel met me in the hallway before breakfast.

“You shouldn’t do this.””

I looked at him.

“You told me the truth because you wanted me to do something.””

“I told you because I was scared.””

“Of what?””

He looked toward the stairs.

“Of Vanessa.””

That answer shocked me.

Not because I thought Vanessa was innocent.

Because I realized my brother had been living in fear inside his own home.

“Daniel,” I said, “help me open that door.””

He shook his head.

“I can’t.””

“You can.””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“I tried once.””

I waited.

“What happened?””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“Vanessa found out.””

“And?””

“She told me if I ever went down there again, she would make sure I never saw Sophia.””

The hallway felt colder.

“She threatened you?””

He nodded.

“She said nobody would believe me.””

Before I could respond, Sophia appeared at the top of the stairs.

She was holding her rabbit.

“Uncle Michael?””

I turned.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

She looked at the basement door.

Then at me.

“You found it?””

I crouched down.

“Found what?””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“The room.””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Sophia, go back upstairs.””

But she shook her head.

“No.””

It was the first time I had heard her speak with confidence.

“No more.””

Daniel froze.

Sophia walked closer.

“She said I was bad.””

My heart tightened.

“Who said that?””

“Aunt Rachel.””

The name hung in the air.

“She said if I told Daddy, nobody would love me.””

Daniel covered his mouth.

He looked devastated.

Sophia continued.

“But Daddy found out.””

She looked at him.

“Daddy cried.””

Daniel turned away.

I had never seen my brother cry.

Not when our father died.

Not when his marriage nearly fell apart.

Not ever.

But now he was wiping tears from his face.

Then Vanessa’s voice came from behind us.

“What exactly are we discussing?””

Everyone froze.

Sophia grabbed my hand.

Vanessa stood at the bottom of the stairs.

She was holding a set of keys.

The basement key.

“You all seem very interested in a room nobody should enter.””

I stared at the key.

“Why do you have it?””

She smiled.

“Because I own this house.””

Daniel stepped between us.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“You promised.””

The color drained from his face.

“What?””

“You promised you would never tell anyone.””

I felt my stomach drop.

Because that sentence wasn’t about Rachel.

It was about Daniel.

“You knew,” I said.

Daniel looked at me.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You knew.””

Vanessa walked toward the basement door.

“You have no idea what you’re involving yourself in.””

She unlocked it.

The door opened slowly.

A cold smell drifted up from the darkness.

Old boxes.

Dust.

Something else.

Something I couldn’t identify.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Since you’re so determined to play hero…”

She stepped aside.

“Go ahead.””

I stared into the basement.

Then I saw something on the wall.

A child’s drawing.

A family.

A house.

A little girl.

And written underneath in shaky handwriting:

“Mommy said I deserved it.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

Then Sophia whispered behind me.

“Uncle Michael…”

I turned.

Her face was pale.

“Don’t look in the closet.””

“Why?””

May you like

Her voice barely existed.

“Because that’s where Aunt Rachel was hiding.””
