Chapter 14: The Last Secret In The House
Sophia sat on the couch between me and Daniel.
The police gave her time.
No pressure.
No questions.
Just silence.
Sometimes children remember things in pieces.
A sound.
A smell.
A sentence.
A feeling.
And when Sophia finally spoke, her voice was barely above a whisper.
“The night Aunt Rachel disappeared…”
She looked at Rachel.
“I heard people yelling.””
Rachel closed her eyes.
“I’m sorry you heard that.””
Sophia shook her head.
“I heard Mommy.””
Everyone looked at Vanessa.
“She was angry.””
Sophia squeezed her rabbit.
“She said Aunt Rachel was ruining everything.””
Vanessa looked down.
For once, she had nothing to say.
“And then…”
Sophia stopped.
Daniel leaned closer.
“You’re safe.””
She nodded.
“Then Richard came.””
The room froze.
Richard’s face changed.
Sophia continued.
“He told Mommy not to worry.””
I looked at the officer.
He immediately wrote something down.
“What did he say?””
Sophia thought carefully.
“He said…”
She swallowed.
“He said, ‘Daniel will believe whatever we show him.’”
Daniel closed his eyes.
That sentence hurt because it was true.
Richard stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous.””
The officer blocked him.
“Stay there.””
Sophia continued.
“They took Aunt Rachel’s phone.””
Rachel looked shocked.
“My phone?””
Sophia nodded.
“They said they needed to make people think she ran away.””
The truth finally came together.
Rachel wasn’t the villain.
She had been the person trying to protect Sophia.
And Vanessa had spent years rewriting the story.
But there was still one question.
“Why?”” I asked.
Everyone looked at Vanessa.
She sat quietly.
Then she laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because she had run out of excuses.
“You all want to know why?””
Nobody answered.
She looked at Daniel.
“Because I was losing control.””
The honesty was disturbing.
“I built this family.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Yes.””
Her voice became bitter.
“I gave up everything.””
Rachel interrupted.
“You hurt people because you were unhappy.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
Rachel stood.
“I understand perfectly.””
The officer stepped forward.
“Mrs. Carter, you need to come with us.””
Vanessa looked at Sophia one last time.
And for a second, I thought she might apologize.
She didn’t.
Instead, she whispered:
“You’ll regret choosing them.””
Daniel immediately moved in front of Sophia.
“No.””
His voice was calm.
Final.
“You don’t get to scare her anymore.””
The officers escorted Vanessa outside.
Richard followed shortly after.
But before he left, he looked at Daniel.
“You think this fixes everything?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Richard smiled.
“It doesn’t.””
Then he walked away.
The house became quiet.
Not peaceful.
Not yet.
Too much had happened for peace to arrive quickly.
But quiet.
That night, Daniel sat beside Sophia’s bed.
I watched from the hallway.
He read her the same Christmas story he had probably read a hundred times.
But this time, Sophia listened.
This time, she wasn’t afraid.
Rachel stood beside me.
“She deserved better.””
I nodded.
“So did you.””
She smiled sadly.
“I thought nobody would ever believe me.””
I looked at her.
“You were right.””
She looked surprised.
“Until today.””
I nodded.
“Until today.””
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One photo.
A picture of the basement.
Taken after the police left.
My blood ran cold.
May you like
Because underneath the photo were six words.
“You found the wrong secret.””
