Chapter 3: The Locked Basement

Vanessa stood there holding a coffee mug.

She looked completely calm.

Too calm.

“I was just looking around,” I said.

She tilted her head.

“You’ve always been curious, Michael.””

There was something strange about the way she said my name.

Like she wasn’t talking to her husband’s brother.

Like she was warning me.

“I couldn’t sleep,” I replied.

Vanessa took a sip of coffee.

“The guest room still uncomfortable?””

“No.””

“Then what brought you downstairs?””

I looked at the basement door.

Then back at her.

“Honestly?””

She waited.

“I heard something.””

For the first time, her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“What did you hear?””

I shrugged.

“I’m not sure.””

She walked closer.

“You know, Sophia has always been sensitive.””

I said nothing.

“She creates stories when she wants attention.””

I looked directly at her.

“Stories about bruises?””

Her hand stopped around the coffee cup.

The silence between us felt heavy.

Then she smiled.

“You saw that?””

There was no surprise.

No concern.

Just irritation.

“She’s clumsy,” Vanessa said.

“Clumsy children fall.””

“Exactly.””

“Children don’t explain their injuries like they’re afraid.””

Her face hardened.

“You don’t understand our family.””

Maybe she expected me to back down.

Maybe she expected me to apologize.

I didn’t.

Because suddenly I remembered Daniel from the night before.

Not angry.

Not confused.

Afraid.

Vanessa noticed my expression.

“You should be careful, Michael.””

The words sounded gentle.

But they weren’t.

“Careful about what?””

She stepped closer.

“About believing everything a child says.””

Then she walked away.

I waited until she disappeared.

Then I unlocked my phone.

I had secretly copied the audio recording.

I sent it to myself.

If anything happened, I wanted someone else to have it.

But I still needed to know what was downstairs.

That afternoon, Daniel announced that he and Vanessa were taking Sophia to visit Vanessa’s parents.

“Just for a few days,” Daniel said.

I looked at Sophia.

She looked at me.

Her eyes widened.

“No.””

Everyone stopped.

Daniel frowned.

“What did you say?””

Sophia lowered her head.

“Nothing.””

I walked closer.

“Sophia?””

She whispered.

“I don’t want to go.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Michael, please don’t encourage this behavior.””

Behavior.

That word again.

Like Sophia was the problem.

I looked at Daniel.

“Can I talk to you alone?””

He hesitated.

Then followed me into the kitchen.

The second we were away from them, I showed him the recorder.

His face changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“Under her chair.””

Daniel went pale.

“Michael…”

“What is happening in this house?””

He looked toward the doorway.

His voice dropped.

“You need to leave.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“You need to take your things and leave before Vanessa realizes you found it.””

My heart stopped.

Because I expected him to deny everything.

I expected anger.

I expected him to defend himself.

Instead, my brother looked terrified.

“Daniel,” I whispered, “what did you do?””

He looked down.

Then he said something that changed everything.

“I didn’t hurt her.””

A pause.

“But I know who did.””

Before I could ask another question, the basement door upstairs slammed shut.

Daniel’s face lost all color.

May you like

Because someone else had heard him.

And that person was walking toward us.
