Chapter 8: The Evidence Vanessa Tried To Erase

The next morning, my father and I met with his lawyer.

I expected old paperwork.

Maybe another bank statement.

I never expected a video.

The lawyer placed a small storage device on the table.

“Your mother left this with instructions.””

My father looked confused.

“Why didn’t I know about this?””

“She requested that it only be opened if there was evidence of financial interference.””

My stomach tightened.

The lawyer looked at me.

“Your mother was very specific.””

He connected the device.

A video appeared.

My mother’s face filled the screen.

I stopped breathing.

I hadn’t seen her move in years.

Hearing her voice felt impossible.

“Emily, if you are watching this, I’m sorry.””

My eyes immediately filled.

“I wanted to believe I was wrong.””

The video shook slightly.

Like she had recorded it secretly.

“I discovered someone had been trying to access your inheritance.””

My father looked down.

My mother continued.

“I confronted Vanessa.””

The room became completely still.

On the screen, my mother looked scared.

“She denied everything.””

Then she said something that made my father look up.

“But I found proof.””

The video ended suddenly.

The lawyer pressed another file.

A scanned document appeared.

A transfer request.

A signature.

Vanessa’s signature.

My father leaned forward.

“When was this?””

The lawyer answered.

“Two months before your wife passed away.””

I felt sick.

“So she started before Mom died?””

Nobody answered.

Because we all knew.

This wasn’t a mistake.

It was planned.

My father stood up.

“I need to talk to Vanessa.””

The lawyer stopped him.

“Daniel, there’s something else.””

He opened another document.

“This concerns the house.””

My heart dropped.

“What about the house?””

The lawyer looked at my father.

“Your wife changed ownership arrangements before she died.””

My father frowned.

“I own this house.””

“Part of it.””

The lawyer pointed to the document.

“Your wife placed Emily’s future interest in a protected agreement.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

“It means certain assets cannot be transferred without Emily’s approval.””

My father looked confused.

“Then how did Vanessa sell anything?””

The lawyer looked at the records.

“That’s what we need to investigate.””

When we returned home, Vanessa was waiting.

She looked nervous.

“You went to see the lawyer.””

My father stared.

“Yes.””

Her face went pale.

“What did he say?””

My father walked closer.

“You tell me.””

She stayed silent.

“You knew about the trust.””

“No.””

“You knew about my wife’s concerns.””

“No.””

“You signed documents using Emily’s name.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You’re really doing this?””

My father shook his head.

“I’m asking why.””

Vanessa’s voice became colder.

“Because someone had to make decisions.””

“Not yours to make.””

She looked at me.

“You think your mother was perfect?””

The words shocked me.

My father immediately said:

“Don’t.””

But Vanessa continued.

“She left you money because she felt guilty.””

My face burned.

“You don’t get to talk about my mother.””

She stepped closer.

“You don’t know the truth about her.””

Before I could respond, my father’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed instantly.

“What?””

He listened.

Then he looked at me.

“They found another transfer.””

My heart stopped.

“From where?””

He slowly lowered the phone.

“From your mother’s account.””

I swallowed.

“How much?””

My father looked at Vanessa.

“Enough to buy a new car.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my father said:

“And the buyer’s name is Madison.””
