Chapter 4: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

My father’s question filled the room like a warning.

“Why did you sign Emily’s name?””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Vanessa stared at the document in his hand, and for the first time since I had known her, she looked completely unprepared.

“Daniel, you’re misunderstanding what you’re seeing.””

My father looked down at the paper again.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“That’s not a misunderstanding.””

He lifted the document.

“This is a legal form transferring control of Emily’s trust account.””

My stomach twisted.

“Transferring control to who?””

Dad didn’t answer immediately.

He looked at the signature.

Then at Vanessa.

“Her.””

The room suddenly felt smaller.

“You put yourself in control of my money?””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“It wasn’t like that.””

“How was it?””

I stepped closer.

“You signed my name.””

She looked at me.

“You were a minor.””

“That doesn’t mean you can pretend to be me.””

Madison stood beside the couch, looking uncomfortable.

“I thought Mom was just helping.””

My father turned toward her.

“Helping?””

His voice carried disappointment.

“Did she tell you what she was doing?””

Madison looked down.

“No.””

“Did she tell you she was moving money?””

Madison stayed silent.

That silence answered everything.

Vanessa walked toward the kitchen.

“I don’t have to stand here while you attack me.””

My father followed her with his eyes.

“No. You’re going to stand here and explain.””

She stopped.

“Daniel, after your first wife died, you were overwhelmed. Someone had to handle things.””

“I never asked you to handle my daughter’s inheritance.””

Her jaw tightened.

“I was trying to protect this family.””

I almost laughed.

Protect?

The same woman who watched her daughter destroy my dress was claiming she protected me.

My father opened another file.

“Then explain this.””

Vanessa looked at the papers.

Her face changed.

“What is that?””

“A withdrawal record.””

Silence.

“Emily’s trust account had money taken out three months ago.””

My heart dropped.

“How much?””

My father looked at me.

“Twenty-five thousand dollars.””

I felt like the floor disappeared.

“That was for college.””

“I know.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“I know.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You’re making this sound worse than it is.””

“Where did the money go?””

She didn’t answer.

My father stepped closer.

“Where did it go?””

Finally, she said:

“It was temporary.””

“Temporary for what?””

She looked away.

“That money helped Madison.””

I couldn’t believe what I heard.

Madison looked up.

“Mom?””

Vanessa quickly turned toward her.

“Don’t worry about it.””

But Madison looked confused.

“You said it was your savings.””

Nobody spoke.

My father closed his eyes for a moment.

Then he asked the question that changed everything.

“What did you buy?””

Vanessa said nothing.

Dad picked up his phone.

“I already requested the transaction details.””

Her face went pale.

“You did what?””

“I wanted answers.””

A few seconds later, his phone buzzed.

He opened the message.

Then his expression became unreadable.

“What?””

I looked at him.

He didn’t respond.

“Dad?””

He slowly turned the phone around.

The transaction list was visible.

There were several purchases.

Designer clothes.

Jewelry.

A luxury vehicle deposit.

And one payment that made my blood run cold.

“Boston dance academy.””

I stared.

“That’s where my competition was held.””

My father nodded.

Vanessa immediately said:

“That wasn’t what you think.””

“What does that mean?””

She looked at Madison.

And Madison suddenly looked terrified.

My father zoomed in on the payment.

“It wasn’t for Emily.””

The room went silent.

“It was for Madison’s private dance lessons.””

I looked at my stepsister.

“You used my money to pay for her?””

Madison shook her head.

“I didn’t know.””

But I noticed something.

She wasn’t surprised.

She was scared.

My father put the papers down.

“Tomorrow morning, we’re going to the bank.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She immediately corrected herself.

“I mean, there’s no reason to make this bigger.””

My father stared at her.

“You’re right.””

His voice was cold.

“It’s already bigger.””

That night, as I walked upstairs, I heard Madison crying.

I stopped outside her room.

I almost walked away.

But then I heard her whisper something that made my blood run cold.

“Mom, you promised nobody would find out about the other account.””

May you like

I froze.

Other account?
