Chapter 7: My Mother’s Last Warning

I stared at the name on the page until the letters blurred.

Vanessa.

My stepmother’s name.

Written in my mother’s handwriting.

For years, Vanessa had told everyone she was the person who helped our family survive after my mother died.

She told people she was the one who kept me safe.

She told my father she had sacrificed everything for us.

But my mother had written her name in a letter hidden inside her own bedroom.

Not as someone she trusted.

As someone she feared.

My father was still holding the paper.

His face looked empty.

Not angry.

Not shocked.

Just hurt.

“Daniel?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad?””

He finally looked at me.

“I need to know everything in this letter.””

I nodded.

We sat on the floor of my mother’s old room and read every page.

The more we read, the worse it became.

My mother had written about strange withdrawals from her personal account.

Missing documents.

Conversations she overheard.

And one sentence that made my hands shake.

“I believe someone close to me is trying to gain access to Emily’s inheritance.””

My father closed his eyes.

“She knew.””

I looked at him.

“She knew something was wrong.””

He nodded slowly.

“And I didn’t listen.””

Before I could answer, we heard the front door open.

Vanessa.

My father immediately stood.

She walked into the hallway carrying her purse.

Then she saw us.

Then she saw the papers.

Her entire body froze.

“What are you doing in here?””

My father held up the letter.

“Explain this.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

“You went through her things?””

My father laughed once.

A cold, broken laugh.

“You’re worried about that?””

He stepped closer.

“My daughter’s mother left a warning about you.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because she hated me.””

The words came out too quickly.

The room went silent.

My father stared at her.

“You just admitted you knew she didn’t trust you.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I meant she misunderstood me.””

I stepped forward.

“Did you take money from my mother?””

Vanessa looked at me.

For a moment, I saw something behind her eyes.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“Emily, you don’t understand adult situations.””

“No.””

My voice was stronger than I expected.

“I understand someone stole from my mother.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“Watch your words.””

My father stepped between us.

“No. You watch yours.””

He held up the letter.

“Because now I want the truth.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You’re choosing her over me?””

My father didn’t respond.

That was answer enough.

Her face twisted.

“I gave this family everything.””

I looked around the room.

At my mother’s photos.

At the life she left behind.

“You gave yourself everything.””

Vanessa became furious.

“You ungrateful—”

“Enough.””

My father’s voice stopped her.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

A lawyer’s office.

He answered.

“Hello?””

The room became silent.

After a few seconds, his expression changed.

“What do you mean there’s another document?””

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“Are you sure?””

My heart started racing.

“What document?””

My father ended the call.

“The lawyer said your mother left one more piece of evidence.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She immediately stopped.

My father narrowed his eyes.

“How do you know there’s evidence?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

And that was the moment I realized something.

May you like

She wasn’t afraid of what we might find.

She was afraid because she already knew what was hidden.
