Chapter 13: The Witness My Mother Left Behind
The name on the document made my heart stop.
“Mrs. Eleanor Hayes.””
I stared at the paper.
My mother’s best friend.
The woman who had disappeared from our lives after my mother died.
I barely remembered her.
Only pieces.
Her warm smile.
The way she used to bring me strawberry cupcakes after school.
The way my mother trusted her completely.
My father looked confused.
“Eleanor?””
The lawyer nodded.
“She was listed as the emergency witness for the trust agreement.””
“But she left.””
The lawyer looked at the documents.
“Not by choice.””
The room became silent.
“What does that mean?””
The lawyer opened another file.
“After your wife passed away, Eleanor attempted to contact you several times.””
My father frowned.
“I never received anything.””
“That’s the problem.””
The lawyer placed copies of old letters on the table.
“Every letter was returned.””
My father picked one up.
The envelope was old.
The address was his.
But the words written across it were:
RETURN TO SENDER.
My father looked shocked.
“Who handled the mail?””
Nobody answered.
But we all knew.
Vanessa.
She had controlled everything.
The information.
The documents.
The people around us.
The lawyer continued.
“Eleanor also tried to access the trust records, but someone blocked her authorization.””
My father looked at Vanessa.
“You blocked her.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You’re making assumptions.””
“No.””
My father’s voice was calm.
“I’m finally seeing the pattern.””
The lawyer checked his notes.
“Eleanor agreed to meet today.””
My father looked at me.
“You don’t have to be there.””
I shook my head.
“Yes, I do.””
For years, I wondered what my mother knew before she died.
Now I finally had a chance to find out.
When we arrived at the small café where Eleanor was waiting, I almost didn’t recognize her.
She was older.
Her hair was gray.
But when she saw me, her eyes filled with tears.
“Emily?””
I nodded.
She immediately stood.
“Oh my goodness.””
She covered her mouth.
“You look exactly like your mother.””
That sentence broke something inside me.
Nobody had said that in years.
We sat down.
Eleanor held my hands.
“I’m so sorry.””
“For what?””
“For not protecting you sooner.””
My father leaned forward.
“What happened after my wife died?””
Eleanor looked down.
“Your wife knew something was wrong before she passed.””
I held my breath.
“She found missing money.””
My father closed his eyes.
“She told me she was worried.””
Eleanor nodded.
“She wanted to tell you everything.””
“Why didn’t she?””
Eleanor looked at me.
“Because she was afraid.””
I felt cold.
“Of Vanessa?””
Eleanor nodded.
“She believed Vanessa was manipulating the family.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“What exactly did she find?””
Eleanor reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“Your mother gave me this.””
I stared.
“She told me to keep it hidden unless Emily needed protection.””
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
A photograph of Vanessa.
Standing with a man I didn’t recognize.
The same man from the recording.
The financial advisor.
My father looked at it.
“Who is he?””
Eleanor answered.
“Richard Blake.””
My father went still.
“He managed our accounts.””
“Yes.””
Eleanor’s voice lowered.
“But he wasn’t just helping Vanessa.””
She looked at me.
“He was helping her plan.””
My stomach dropped.
“How long?””
Eleanor swallowed.
“Longer than anyone knew.””
The café suddenly felt too quiet.
My father looked at the photograph again.
“Why didn’t you come forward?””
Eleanor’s eyes filled.
“Because after your wife died, I received a message.””
“What message?””
She looked at him.
“A warning.””
My father leaned closer.
“From who?””
Eleanor looked toward me.
“From Vanessa.””
My blood ran cold.
“What did she say?””
Eleanor whispered:
“She told me if I tried to expose the truth, Emily would lose everything.””
I felt tears forming.
My mother spent her final days trying to protect me.
And Vanessa spent years making sure nobody could help me.
Then Eleanor reached into her bag again.
“This isn’t all.””
She placed another envelope on the table.
“Your mother left one final instruction.””
My father opened it carefully.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Three sentences.
He read them silently.
Then his face changed.
“What does it say?””
He looked at me.
And whispered:
“Your mother knew Vanessa would eventually try to destroy your future.””
May you like
A pause.
“She prepared a way to stop her.””
