Chapter 14: My Mother’s Final Gift
The next morning, my father took me to the attorney’s office.
I thought we were there to finish the legal process.
I was wrong.
The attorney placed a large folder in front of me.
“Emily, your mother created this before she passed away.””
I looked at the folder.
“What is it?””
“A protection package.””
My father looked confused.
“She planned for this?””
The attorney nodded.
“She knew Vanessa might try to control the inheritance.””
My hands moved slowly as I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Letters.
And one final message.
My mother’s handwriting.
Emily,
If you are reading this, I hope it means you are strong enough to face the truth.
I stopped reading.
My eyes filled.
The attorney quietly waited.
I continued.
I never wanted money to become a burden for you.
I wanted it to give you choices.
Not fear.
I touched the paper.
My mother understood.
She knew money could destroy relationships.
She knew people could become dangerous when they wanted control.
My father wiped his eyes.
“I should have protected you.””
I looked at him.
“You’re protecting me now.””
He nodded.
The attorney explained everything.
The trust had never belonged to Vanessa.
The documents she changed had no legal power.
The money she moved would be investigated.
The house was protected.
My future was protected.
But there was one thing left.
The competition.
I almost laughed.
After everything, the dance competition seemed small.
But my father disagreed.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“That was the one thing she tried hardest to take from you.””
The next day, I returned to the dance studio.
My instructor hugged me.
“I heard what happened.””
I smiled.
“I’m okay.””
She looked at my shoes.
“You’re dancing in those?””
I looked down.
The borrowed shoes weren’t perfect.
Neither was the dress.
But I was still there.
“Yes.””
She smiled.
“Then you’re ready.””
That night, I stood backstage before my final performance.
My father was in the audience.
For the first time in weeks, I felt calm.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Vanessa.
I stared at the screen.
I almost deleted it.
But I opened it.
Emily,
You think you won.
You have no idea what your mother really left behind.
My stomach tightened.
Then another message appeared.
A photo.
It was a picture of an old document.
A document I had never seen.
The title at the top made my heart stop.
“Final Beneficiary Amendment.””
I looked closer.
There was my mother’s signature.
My hands started shaking.
How?
How could Vanessa still have something?
I looked toward the stage.
The music was about to start.
But I couldn’t move.
Then another message arrived.
This time, only five words.
“Ask your father who I am.””
I turned toward the audience.
My father was watching me.

And for the first time…
I wondered if there was another secret he had never told me.
