Chapter 10: The Box That Held The Truth

My father stared at Vanessa.

“Why?””

One word.

That was all he said.

But the fear in her face answered before her mouth did.

She looked around the room.

At me.

At Madison.

Then back at Daniel.

“Because you don’t know what you’re going to find.””

My father slowly stood.

“That’s exactly why I’m going.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, please.””

I had never heard her say that before.

Not like that.

Not with fear.

My father grabbed his coat.

“For years, I believed you because I trusted you.””

He looked at the papers on the table.

“I believed you because I thought you loved my daughter.””

Vanessa’s expression softened.

“I do love Emily.””

I almost laughed.

The words felt impossible.

My father shook his head.

“If you loved her, we wouldn’t be standing here.””

Madison sat quietly.

She looked completely different from the confident girl who had cut my dress.

She looked like someone watching her entire world collapse.

The bank was only fifteen minutes away.

But it felt like an hour.

When we arrived, a manager was waiting for us.

“Mr. Cross?””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

The manager glanced at Vanessa.

Then looked away.

That told me everything.

“You requested access to the safety deposit box?””

My father said:

“Yes.””

The manager unlocked a private room.

My hands were shaking.

I didn’t know what we would find.

More documents?

More stolen money?

Something worse?

Vanessa stood behind us.

She looked like she wanted to run.

The manager placed the box on the table.

My father opened it.

The first thing inside was a stack of envelopes.

The second was a folder.

The third was a small voice recorder.

My father picked up the folder.

His face changed immediately.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What is it?””

He opened the first page.

Then handed it to me.

I read the words.

My mother’s name.

My father’s name.

And Vanessa’s.

But it wasn’t a bank document.

It was a written statement.

A statement from my mother.

“She knew.””

My father whispered.

The lawyer’s words from yesterday suddenly made sense.

My mother had prepared for this.

I opened the next page.

My mother had written:

“I am documenting everything because I believe Vanessa is attempting to gain control over Emily’s inheritance.””

My eyes filled with tears.

She knew.

She tried to protect me.

Even after she was gone.

Then my father picked up the recorder.

“What is this?””

Vanessa immediately spoke.

“Daniel, don’t.””

Everyone froze.

My father looked at her.

“You know what’s on this?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

He pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice.

Vanessa’s voice.

“I just need him to sign the papers.””

My blood went cold.

A second voice answered.

A man’s voice.

“Are you sure she won’t notice?””

Vanessa replied:

“She’s a child. By the time she understands, everything will already be transferred.””

I covered my mouth.

My father looked like someone had punched him.

The recording continued.

“I’ll move the money slowly.””

Vanessa’s voice.

“Daniel trusts me.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Madison started crying.

“That’s not real.””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“Madison—”

“No.””

Madison stepped back.

“You lied.””

Vanessa looked desperate.

“I did it for us.””

“For us?””

Madison shook her head.

“You used Emily’s money.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“You don’t understand.””

My father looked at her.

“No.””

His voice was cold.

“You don’t understand.””

He picked up the folder.

“You didn’t just steal money.””

He looked at me.

“You tried to steal my daughter’s future.””

Vanessa suddenly moved toward the box.

“Give me that.””

My father stepped away.

“No.””

Her calm disappeared.

“Daniel, you don’t know what you’re doing.””

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

He closed the box.

Then looked at me.

“Protecting Emily.””

As we left the bank, I thought it was over.

I thought we finally had the truth.

But when we reached the car, my father’s phone rang.

He answered.

Then his expression changed.

“Wait.””

A pause.

“What do you mean there’s a second person involved?””

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He slowly lowered the phone.

The color had disappeared from his face.

“The person who helped Vanessa…”

May you like

He looked at me.

“It wasn’t who we thought.””
