Chapter 11: The Person Behind Vanessa

The words followed me all night.

It wasn’t who we thought.

I sat on my bed staring at the damaged dance shoes still sitting in the corner.

A week ago, my biggest worry had been a competition.

Now I was discovering secrets my family had hidden for years.

My father spent the entire evening making calls.

Lawyers.

Bank officials.

Investigators.

Every time the phone rang, I felt my stomach tighten.

Finally, around midnight, he came into my room.

“Emily.””

I looked up.

“Who helped her?””

He sat beside me.

“I don’t know yet.””

“You said it wasn’t who we thought.””

He looked down.

“I found another signature.””

My heart sank.

“Whose?””

He hesitated.

“Someone who had access to your mother’s accounts.””

I waited.

“Your grandfather’s financial advisor.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He handled some of your mother’s paperwork before she died.””

“Why would he help Vanessa?””

“That’s what we need to find out.””

The next morning, my father and I met with his lawyer again.

The lawyer placed a new file on the table.

“We traced the transfers.””

My father leaned forward.

“And?””

“The money wasn’t going directly to Vanessa.””

My stomach dropped.

“Then where?””

The lawyer opened the file.

“A private investment account.””

My father looked confused.

“Who owns it?””

The lawyer turned the page.

Then stopped.

“Madison.””

Silence.

I looked at my father.

“What?””

The lawyer continued.

“The account was created in Madison’s name.””

My father looked devastated.

“No.””

Madison sat across from us.

She looked terrified.

“I didn’t open any account.””

The lawyer nodded.

“We believe someone used your identity.””

Everyone looked at Vanessa.

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

My father stood.

“You used your daughter too?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.

“You think I wanted this?””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew what to believe anymore.

Madison started crying.

“I swear I didn’t know.””

I looked at her.

For the first time, I believed her.

She had been jealous.

She had been cruel.

But this was bigger than jealousy.

She had been controlled.

The lawyer slid another document forward.

“There is one more thing.””

My father looked.

“What?””

“The investment account has one recent transaction.””

“When?””

“Yesterday.””

My heart stopped.

“Yesterday?””

The lawyer nodded.

“The money was moved after Daniel discovered the missing funds.””

My father stood immediately.

“Where did it go?””

The lawyer looked at the paper.

“To an offshore account.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my father asked:

“Whose account?””

The lawyer slowly answered.

“Vanessa Cross.””

My father closed his eyes.

Madison looked at her mother.

“You lied again.””

Vanessa stood.

“I can explain.””

My father shook his head.

“I’m done listening to explanations.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked powerless.

But then she smiled.

A small, confident smile.

It scared me.

Because it wasn’t the smile of someone caught.

It was the smile of someone who still had a plan.

“You think you won?””

My father stared.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at me.

Then said:

“You should ask your daughter why she never told you what happened the night your mother died.””

My blood froze.

My father turned toward me.

“What is she talking about?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I knew exactly what memory Vanessa was talking about.

May you like

A memory I had buried for years.

A memory I never told anyone.
