Chapter 3: The Money Nobody Wanted Me To Find

After the competition, my father didn’t celebrate right away.

He kept looking at me like he was trying to decide whether to tell me something.

That scared me more than anything.

On the drive home, the car was silent.

Finally, I asked:

“Dad, what happened to Mom’s money?””

His hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“Who told you about that?””

I showed him the message.

He pulled over.

For several seconds, he just stared at the screen.

“Emily.””

His voice was careful.

“What do you know?””

“Nothing.””

I swallowed.

“That’s the problem.””

He looked out the window.

“My mother left money for me?””

“She left something for you.””

“What does that mean?””

He sighed.

“When your mother passed away, she created a trust for your future.””

I felt numb.

“How much?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation hurt.

“Dad.””

He finally answered.

“Enough to help you through college.””

I looked down.

“Did Vanessa know?””

He didn’t answer.

And that was my answer.

When we got home, Vanessa was waiting in the living room.

Madison sat beside her.

The moment they saw our faces, they knew something had changed.

“Daniel,” Vanessa said softly, “what happened?””

My father walked past her.

“Where is the paperwork from Emily’s mother’s trust?””

Vanessa froze.

“What?””

“The trust documents.””

She laughed nervously.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

My father placed his laptop on the table.

“I checked the records.””

Madison looked between us.

“What’s going on?””

Dad opened a file.

“There are missing documents.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“You’re accusing me?””

“I’m asking a question.””

“No.””

She stood.

“You’re blaming me because Emily got hurt today.””

I stepped forward.

“This isn’t about the dress anymore.””

Vanessa looked at me.

For the first time, I saw anger instead of fake kindness.

“You have no idea how much your father has sacrificed for you.””

I stared at her.

“I saved money for my own shoes.””

“You always think you’re the victim.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

My father immediately stepped between us.

“Enough.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You’re really going to do this? Destroy our family over her?””

My father’s face changed.

“Our family?””

He pointed toward my destroyed shoes sitting by the door.

“You let your daughter ruin something my daughter worked for.””

Then he pointed at the laptop.

“And now I’m finding missing money.””

Madison stood suddenly.

“Mom, tell him.””

Everyone turned.

Vanessa looked at her.

“Tell him what?””

Madison’s confidence disappeared.

“I thought you said it was already handled.””

My father went completely still.

“What was already handled?””

Vanessa grabbed Madison’s arm.

“Go upstairs.””

“No.””

My father’s voice was sharp.

“She stays.””

Madison looked terrified.

“I didn’t know it was wrong.””

My stomach dropped.

“What wasn’t wrong?””

Madison looked at Vanessa.

Then at my father.

And whispered:

“Mom said Emily would never find out because she already changed the paperwork.””

The room went silent.

My father slowly reached for the folder on the table.

His hands were shaking.

“What paperwork?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, don’t.””

But he opened the folder anyway.

And the first page he saw had a signature at the bottom.

A signature that was not mine.

My father looked up at Vanessa.

“Why did you sign Emily’s name?””
